Do you have what it takes to survive here?

Many people come to Thailand to live on the cheap. But if the going gets rough, you lose your job or source of income, can you live on a couple of dollars a day?

When I moved to Thailand seventeen years ago, I came with $10,000 cash and a monthly income of $1200 a month. A few months after arriving, the person who purchased my business defaulted on the loan. Instead of flying back to the United States and going after him, I figured it was a lost cause and decided to stay in Thailand. Taking him to court and winning a judgement would be costly and time consuming and there was no guarantee I would ever see any of the money. Plus, I was just starting to settle in. Leaving was the last thing on my mind.

Courageous, no. I just knew what I wanted to do and focused on doing it. Not sure what you mean about my having a good identity though. I'm just an ordinary guy, like everyone else.

As far as what I do...I do many things. My wife and I have land that is producing rubber and vegetables, I work as a photographer and writer, my wife is a sales exec. at a big hotel, so every little bit helps. That's the thing, sometimes it takes more than one job to make ends meet. I don't really work for anyone so while I have several jobs, I work for myself, which I like. That's good enough for me.

Terror, not really. Anger, yes. I was quite pissed off that the buyer of my business defaulted and I had not safeguarded against this. I could have went back home but doing so would have meant conceding failure.
