PRIVATE MESSAGE SYSTEM QUESTIONS

Post new topic

James

Hi Julien,

It's very obvious that the postings asking about WHY people can't send private messages are going to continue whatever we do. There are already hundreds, which none of the new members ever seem to read so they just add one more.

I think that it's necessary to post a clear explanation with a sticky at the top of the Help us improve the website. "PRIVATE MESSAGE QUESTIONS, READ THIS FIRST!" and lay things out in terms that even a child can understand. I know that won't stop the needless postings, but it will help.

People please!!!! What is unclear about the following error message?

"The following errors need to be corrected before the message can be posted:

Your message hasn't been sent. In order to prevent issues, the private message system is not fully activated for new users. Have you presented yourself on the forum ? Please exchange a few messages with us on the forum, and we will fully activate the private message system. Thank you !"

You have to participate in the forums in order to use the private message system... what don't you understand about that?

Really Julien, there's got to be some method of ensuring that new members read the Terms and Conditions and Code of Conduct for the forums. Perhaps in the registration process it should be necessary to check off a box that ONLY appears at the end of the Terms and Conditions of use in order to complete registration, failing checking off the box resulting in the registration not being completed.

Your frustration is understandable, but no single message is ever going to get the point across.  A lot of the people here have a weak grasp of English and even those who can read don't always read the messages that would answer their questions.

For too many people it's too easy to just complain about something they think is broken or a personal attack on them than it is to look around for a second and see if the answer already exists.  Welcome to the internet.

With due all respect to share:

Terms and conditions arent practical to orient people especially it is lengthy. Though it will always be there but Maybe before completing the registration there is some sort of one liner general rule that is impossible not to read :)
Honestly for me i did not read any terms, just trying to learn thru topics the do's and dont's.:)

Anyway thanks EB founder and team! Good job!

Hello honey&lemon

As in any social network, e-mail server, etc., that you will find on the internet there are rules and terms & conditions of use that one must follow.  Also as with all of the above the registration process requires that the applicant affirm that they have read and agree to abide by those rules.

Expat-blog is no different from any of the others. The image below is the registration screen, which I'm sure you are familiar with since you have recently registered as a member. If you notice the checkbox in the lower left corner of the screen indicating that the applicant has read and agrees with the terms & conditions. When you registered, you checked off this box or the registration process simply does not complete. Also there is a Code of Conduct for each nation's forum, I know because I was instrumental in drafting that document.

Now, with all due respect, you tell us you didn't read them and you don't think that Expat-blog is doing enough to let people know the rules and the way things work? Have I got that right?

What can I say other than; sometimes I find it difficult to understand the thinking process of some people.

I totally agree with you about different people's understanding but i didnt imply nor even think that you are not doing enough. Honestly i truly understand how difficult it is to let people truly understand the whole system, but we have to consider that people are of different orientation and personalities. I know that all the efforts have been done but i presume that people will just click the agree button just to coninue the registration. I would say this honestly beacuse this happened to me, or maybe even some of the members.
I hope you wont get me wrong as i dont have any intentions of any negative implications. Jut trying to see some scenarios.
In my workplace and my job , we do a lot of systems and processes as well as procedures, but we still get the same effect that people will not read even it was laid down to them. They will just sign the doument and say ageee them at the end they will still ask. I feel frustrated with this because i was the one formulated hose documents but they did not have time to read.
Having said that, i would apologize for not reading the terms and condition :)
I have a very high regard for the EB Team especially to you who is obviously very talented and has innate wisdom and intelligence, but not all have the wisdom of the EB team  .

It might be a good idea to simplify the message, to "lay things out in terms that even a child can understand".

Your message hasn't been sent. In order to prevent issues, the private message system is not fully activated for new users. Have you presented yourself on the forum ? Please exchange a few messages with us on the forum, and we will fully activate the private message system.

This might be too advanced for people struggling with English.  Maybe something simple like "you cannot send private messages until you post on the forum".

Primadonna

I agree with Honey&lemon and with Haily:

people do not read always the term and condition because of the time or they English is not advanced enough to understand. Or maybe they just to excited to be a member of this forum and they click on the box just to complete the registration.

So what Hailey suggest I think this is a good solution, I would say that you must post x number (lets say 10 posts) on the forum before you can send pm.
