im a filipino guy and i arrived in milan for almost five months now. i was petitioned by my wife....can anyone give me some tips as to how to learn the language quite easily....i've been attending italian classes for almost two months now but the language is just too difficult to learn....and my teacher can't speak english so if i wanna ask a question, there's no way i could ask her and she wouldn't be able to explain it in english anyway....she speaks quite fast and uses italian words too difficult to understand....it's a nightmare....i also need a job (any job) so could anyone help me find one...thanks

Hi there! I am moving to Rome in september and I am learning italian online with Rosetta Stone. It is a start, but once I am there,I am hoping to practice speaking it more. It sounds like you could do with finding a free language exchange once a week to practice what you learn in class...find someone who speaks ok english so they can explain things you aren't clear on and in exchange they practice english. The rosetta stone is not bad either. Good luck, and don't give up, you will get the hang of it very soon I'm sure!!:)

wow....you brought hope to me....thank you for the encouragement....i bought this CD collins easy learning italian (audio course)...it has english translation of it...it is in a way help actually....but i agree, i think your suggestion of having a once a week one on one english-italian lesson to someone who can speak both languages is a great idea....i hope i could find one and i hope it won't be expensive

Yes any extra material you can download on your ipod - even phrases you can just listen to when you're walking around is really useful! I got something like that and just play it when i'm walking round london and it sort of just sinks in! Plus you live there and you'll be surprised after 6 months you just absorb without knowing it. The language exchanges should be free - advertise on expat sites like this and put an ad onto a free online listings service for milan to meet up with an italian who wants to practice english once a week. I've done it a few times in London. If you had an extra 20-40 euro a week then i wld say get a private tutor but i think to be honest you will start picking it up quickly enough! Buona fortuna!

oh you're from london...i used to work there for nearly 7 years....i came as tourist, applied for a working visa, i spent quite a lot for the solicitor to arrange my papers but it turned out that my application was denied so i decided to go home to the philippines so now im here in milan for good...i worked as a volunteer for Global Women's Strike and as aprivate cleaner at primrose hill, islington, hanger lane, and ealing.....actually my italian teacher wants us to have a one on one lesson but the problem is she can't speak english at all....i started reading some italian books for children (funny) and you know what i do understand some of the phrases and sentences....not bat...im getting there...hahaha

For those that live in Rome - try to come to Expats living in Rome nights on Tuesdays in the center. There is free language exchange- You can find them also on Facebook.
