Hi, i have joined this forum seeking some help, my father was Norwegian and came to Scotland at the out set of WW2, he served with the Norwegian Army during the war, Military Police and was stationed at the castle in Olso in the first days of German surrender, The help i am after is how to obtain his medals (i am ex British Army / 22yrs served) I have contacted the Norwegian Government Department concerned with this subject, but they were not really forthcoming and stated no record of my father being in the Army, this is strange because he was in receipt of a War/Army/Disabilty & Seamans pensions from the Norwegians for years prior to his death, i also have some military papers/orders from the war in relation to him .He was not directly involved in any battles but after his time in Olso he was sent to Berlin but due to an injury (moterbike) he was discharged from the Army in circa 47/48, i believe he is due some medals from his service (he never claimed them) as i would like my son to have his grand fathers medals as well as mine to add to his own as he is also in the British Army, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as i have been trying for years off and on, with this subject Thankyou

Hello,

This caught my interest and as I’m a Norwegian student, I can try give you some advice.

First of all, have you tried to contact “Forsvaret”, in other words, the military in Norway? They have something called the decorating-council, and their responsibilities are to decide who to decorate etc. You can try to send an e-mail to: veterantjenesten@mil.no which is where every question about veterans should be sent.

Also, if you have done that, you could try is to send an e-mail to a history-professor which specialize in occupation-history, and explain your situation to them. Maybe they can give you some advice on who to contact in the Norwegian government, or in the military.

One person you could try is Ole Kristian Grimnes (google him and you get his email) as he has written books about the occupation.

What you should do when writing them is having a very clear (and juicy) subject-text. As historians would be very interested in this, you should be short and precise.

I hope this was somewhat helpful.

Hi Fenre

First of all, i would like to apologise to you for not replying to your Email sooner, i would also like to thank you for taking the time to help/advise me. I will be following your advice in contacting the Norwegian Military department you mentioned, if that fails in getting an answer i will then contact the Historian mentioned above.

In referance to giving the Historian/Professor a juicy/story, i will try my best but my father rarely talked about his Army service during the war and when he did, he only gave the briefest of details and never mentioned being involved in anything of a major importance.

Hopefully the Hist/Prof will be able to clarify/confirm my fathers war service and certain events that my father may have been involved in during his time stationed at the "Achershuss fortress" in the days just after the German surrender in Norway.
