Hi everyone,

I thought that it's a good idea to start a thread about the events taking place in Riyadh, so all the Riyadh expat community are invited to share upcoming events, & preferably by providing all details.

The event that is taking place these days is the Riyadh International Bookfair. For those of you who are interested the bookfair is starting on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 10:00am till
Friday, March 12, 2010 at 9:00pm. It's on King Abdullah st, near Prince Salman center
Click here to see the map: wikimapia.org/#lat=24.751372&lon=46.726313&z=17&l=0&m=b

Any other events in Riyadh, you know about? Let us know :)

Alliecat

Great idea, Alisan!

About this bookfair, which I'd love to attend:  what days are women allowed to attend, do you know?

Khi

Terrific idea Alisan! Thank you...

There's an International exhibition (bazar-like) from the following countries (Saudi Arabia. Morocco. Egypt. Syria. Kuwai, Yemen, UAE. China. Iran. Pakistan. India) It will last for ten days starting from yesterday. It's on King Fahd street North of Hyper Panda & next to Azziziyah mall (I think they are the same). Surrounding the exhibition they have colorful flags & banners. It opens from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm.
It's worth visiting as it offers some products that you won't find anywhere else in Riyadh. What I loved the most is the Persian section (rugs, & food products), the Moroccan traditional & handmade art & decor. Also, the beautifully painted tea cups, tajines, & wall plates. Even if you don't buy anything the whole atmosphere is interesting & I learned that this exhibition is an annual event.

Alisan

My pleasure guys :)

Salman Omrani

Actually that's what I was expecting...but I was really surprised.

Its actually very well organised. (getting there was hectic...TIP..follow signs to main gate..and you can park near and in a proper spot...no neeed to park 2km away like some were doing)

Its interesting and interactive...learn alot about culture, history and there are presentations from current institutions and educational establisments.

Well worth the visit...you will need at minimum 3 hours to see some (not all) of the exhibitions...

well worth the visit

musicman

thats wonderful news, indeed.
at least we are seeing some change in 30 years, now.
Alhamdulillah!

Alliecat

I'll be going on Thursday.  I'll let you know how it compares to US things in big convention centers lol  When I was a kid I used to love the 'rod and custom' shows--great place to pick up cute guys

HI my family and I went to the festival Sunday after isha and it was amazing, so much fun. I heard it was horrid on the weekend due to all the people. Tomorrow is the last night and the weekend so I would urge you to go tonight and yes its VERY worth it. I think we may go back tonight. Go on all the little turns bc you may think you are done but each turn goes into a new world. I actually made a post about it here:

I went yesterday (Thursday) and it was a mad rush. People were rushing to get parking lots on the sandy area although there was plenty of parking space on the compound itself. I found the crowd quite refreshing though - I find the city generally pretty "deserted", at most there are crowds at the malls.  It was a great experience. Hope there are more events like this soon!

For Mall Addicts I am told that the new Paramount mall on Takhasusi Street has been opened. Ftom its exterior, during the building phase, it looked monumental in size and shape. I bet it must be a great hunting ground for the hens on the forum? Enjoy the shopping, ladies...

Its only 25% open.
Danube and Jarir book stall are open - very little else - other than food court and children's fun fair.

My husband and I were invited to go with some Saudi friends to  the Janadriyah Festival today.  So glad we went, it was great!  I would recommend it to all...  But bring your walking shoes, there is a ton of things to see, and you'll need a full day to cover it all - its huge!  Glad we had our Saudi friends with us BC if you don't read Arabic, its tough to know what your looking at!  :)

Alisan

Yeah been there on Thursday was nice but really crowded..unfortunately today is the last day though. for those who missed it, they ll have to wait till next year..

Alisan

Al-Othaim mall is holding an exhibition for women, starting from 5th of April & lasts for 2 weeks.

Time: 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: Al Faisaliah Hotel - please reserve prior
Description: The Brunch to End All Brunches

Four dining concepts combine in the Brunch at Al Faisaliah Hotel

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - With an expansive array of dishes from global cuisines and an unparalleled team of chefs, Riyadh's discerning diners are applauding the high-end culinary experience on Fridays at Al Faisaliah Hotel, A Rosewood Hotel.

Renowned for its exquisite levels of service and flawless cuisine, the Brunch at Al Faisaliah Hotel will bring taste buds alight as the creative team behind the hotel's signature restaurants, overseen by Executive Chef Wolfgang Eberle, come together to blend the finest ingredients from around the world and offer four unique dining concepts in one brunch.

The chefs of the Brazilian churrascaria IL Terrazzo, the French gourmet Cristal restaurant, and the celebrated restaurant The Globe join forces at Al Faisaliah Hotel's La Brasserie for Friday afternoon. A powerful combination of highly regarded international chefs results in a brunch fit for royalty featuring the best of Arabic, Asian, and European cuisine featuring more than 10 live-cooking and prepared food stations.

Lobster wok, sushi, and sashimi are a few of the highlights from the five Asian cuisines on offer. The vast selection of desserts is on display at the European and Lebanese buffet station, as soufflés, pralines and an assortment of Lebanese and French pastries are freshly prepared, capped off with a chocolate fountain to satisfy all sweet-toothed diners.

From dim sum to filet mignon, oysters to goose liver, the variety of dishes available is unmatched in The Kingdom, and the quality of preparation is precisely what one expects from Rosewood Hotels & Resorts.

The brunch, which costs SAR250 (US$67) per person plus 15 per cent service charge, includes unlimited non-alcoholic champagne and caters to the whole family. Children under 6 years old dine for free, while 6 to 12 year olds pay half price. The play area is offered free of charge and stocked with entertainment options, from face-painting to Nintendo Wii Console. Parents are put at ease as childcare specialists are on hand to supervise.

"We understand the emphasis families place on dining and eating out in The Kingdom, and our brunch is designed to ensure every member of the family has fun and experiences multiple world-class cuisines," said Peter Finamore, Managing Director, Al Faisaliah Hotel, A Rosewood Hotel.

"We've united the renowned chefs from all of our restaurants to deliver an explosion of flavours with the freshest ingredients, alongside attentive and individualised service. In keeping with the reputation of our hotel, The Brunch at Al Faisaliah Hotel is truly the most exclusive brunch in the Kingdom."

The award-winning hotel, which forms a towering centre piece amid the exclusive shops, residences and businesses of Riyadh's Al Faisaliah Centre, is most famous for its culinary excellence and spectacular dome restaurant, The Globe, which gives dramatic views across the city.

For booking, please call telephone +966.1.273.2222.

Sounds exciting but for 250 bucks a piece (thats 500 for me and the Mrs), I can think of a 1,000 more things I can achieve successfully that will benefit some of my lesser fortunate brethren on the planet.... back home of course

Alisan

250 per person is definitely pricey, but I thought someone might be interested :)

musicman

while we do enjoy a good meal at a restaurant in riyadh once in a while i still think we need to think about all those folks who go to bed hungry whenever we are faced with a 250 SR brunch, anywhere on the planet.

i wud find it hard to digest if i was seated in there at the tower on Friday morning....
