What neighborhood is the US Embassy in? Is that a nice area to live in?

8 Kamal El Din Salah St., Garden City, Cairo.

Yes it's fine.

Maadi is a good option for expats too.  The services, grocery stores, doctors and dentists, etc. are plentiful and if you're into baseball or anything like that there are teams you can join (or just go there to watch).

I keep reading that maadi is a nice place...how long would it take to get near the embassy during rush hour?

Average time is around 45 minutes.  There are a couple of routes, one along the Corniche (the street that goes along the Nile) and the other off of the ring road and past Mohammad Ali Mosque and it seems that one or the other is generally flowing, though it can get a bit crazy with traffic.  At first it'll seem like madness, but after you are there for awhile you'll see the method to the madness.  The drivers are polite and will let you move over and so on but when there's an accident it'll lock things up.  I leave early and then have a cup of tea near where I'm going.  The real challenge is finding a place to park!
