Libya maybe?!?

Post new topic

hi all
there's been a few job openings come up lately with one of the oil companies. Theyr'e basically offering fly in/fly out rotational work or to stay on a compound.
I'm thinking of applying but to be honest I'm quite worried about the safety/security issues with working in Libya.
Just wondering if anyone here works in a similar occupation or knows anyone who does.
Am I being too cautious or should I go for it.
Any thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated
: )
ps white British male - if this makes a difference???

Hi there,
I mightn't be much help to you and I don't know the first thing about oil or oil companies or safety at oil rigs /oil fields/compounds but I'll give you my pennies worth anyway. I'm an  Irish woman  married to a lovely Libya man.We were in Tripoli, Libya in Dec/Jan for a couple of weeks to visit his family and to be honest I felt perfectly safe. We walked around freely ,sat in the sun having coffee, visited the old city ,Leptis Magnus and other sites. I was quiet nervous about the trip and my family were worse but I needn't have worried. There was very few army vehicles about the place and in  some ways it was hard to believe that the country was after being through a bloody revolution, although buildings bombed by Nato were very obvious,Gadaffi's compound was blown to pieces and was turned into one big,  massive dumping ground that literally stretched on for miles.
The rubbish situation almost drove me insane though, in  Tripoli it is literally every where, I know this won't make any difference to you if your going to be working in the oil sector but the rubbish and the crazy suicidal driving is just jaw dropping, especially when you are used of Western standards,no MOT in Libya I can tell ya ,lol.
However,in saying that the people were great and I do wish them the absolute best in rebuilding their country. We  are almost finished building our house there at the moment with the hope of moving to Tripoli to try it out once our baby is another few months old.
Good luck with your decision making but I wouldn't rule out going their for a job, give it a go and if you don't like it you can always come back to the UK,it's only a few hours away and Malta is even closer for a break while in Libya.
