Canceling the lease

Hi Nikolite

It’s really disturbing, not to say disgusting, that some dishonest estate agent joins hands with house owners of the same type to make life of people difficult, and at the same time to tarnish the reputation of Mauritius and Mauritians too.

Having said that, I believe that your lease agreement contains a cancellation clause. However, I presume that you are in a tricky situation as you paid a generous deposit.

Should this not be the case, then it won’t be difficult for you to terminate the agreement by giving at least one month notice.

Best of luck

Cheers

Hi Nikolite, write a letter listing the number of occasions you contacted your landlord including the dates if you have them. Mention the landlord's numerous invalid excuses and attach this to a letter of notice to terminate your contract shall he not remedy to the situation(s) in the next 7 or 14 days (depending on how long this has been ongoing). You shouldn't have to forfeit your deposit as the landlord isn't respecting his part of the contract.

Hi Nikolite

DomPriya is quite right in advising you to write a letter stating all the shortcomings. However, I feel that you no longer feel like living in this house and area and deal with this person.

If you so wish, I would advise that you send me a scanned copy of your lease agreement, removing if need be, the name of your poor landlord. My mail is vayid.wimacon@gmail.com, and I will show to one learned friend.

I would, then, be in a better position to advise you on the possible courses of action.

Cheers
