Lan cable was really not needed. You'll have to make one of them work in Repeater mode. Check this out in the available modes.
Other way is to make one of them work in AP mode and connect it to the other one through the lan cable. I guess this is what you were thinking.
Give them both to me. I can do it for you but will take 96 hours of hit-and-try
