I turn 65 next year and want to emigrate to Australia as a pensioner. If I stay in this country I would be able to go back to work and keep my pension. Can you tell me if this idea is applicable in Australia?
I can't seem to get a straight answer from anybody over here in the UK.
I will not be able to pay the huge fee that expats need to pay, so would need to work as well as get my weekly pension to boost my income.

Hi Jeffsmail1949!

Your post has been moved to the Australia forum for better visibility.

Not applicable.
To be brutally honest you would not find a job. The govt would expect you to be able to fund your own medical expenses.

I have UK friends who have been here for many years. They were getting both a UK pension and the Oz pension.

However their Oz pension has been lowered because of the UK pension.

They have a self managed superannuation fund which gives them enough to get by on.

Thanks for your short but critical answer, what is a superannuation fund? I would like to have these things sorted out before I go out there.  Do your English have an email address, I would like to speak to them if possible about my medical expenses.

A superannuation fund is a compulsory fund that your employer has to pay 9% of your salary into each payday. This amount is not taken out of your salary but is an amount that your employer is required to pay, over and above your salary, into the fund.

There are many super funds and they invest the funds and make money on them. Taxes for super funds are low at 15% compared to taxes on salaries which range from 20% to 45%. You get tax relief if you pay your own money, over and above the employer 9%, into the fund When you retire the funds are available to you.

This is the govt way of getting around nor having to pay you a pension when you retire as the more money you have in the fund the pension is reduced until it gets to where you get no pension.

My friends are not willing to give out their email address. They have Australian citizenship and have been here for 35 years. They have an Australian Medicare card which entitles them to free or reduced rate medical expenses.

I suggest that you check out the govt immigration website which should give you more information than I can. www.immi.gov.au

This site gives information on visas as well. As far as I am aware, anyone looking to migrate to Australia has to have their own medical cover or sufficient funds to cover and medical expenses.

This type of answer is very similar to the line in the Godfather film, spoken by Al Pancino. "This is not what I wanted to hear but what I expected!"
All these sites are the same when it comes to replying to newcomers questions, They go out of their way to be unhelpful.
These types of answers won't put me off from going to Australia next year, when I become a pensioner, when I get there I won't expect any help from anyone.
The Australian embassy over here in London is just as bad, the staff are all about 17, no common sense, no experience, and full of parrot type answers, that they have been programmed to say.
All they say is -sorry cant help try sites this one where you may or may not get an answer.

Sorry that you think my replies are unhelpful.

I am being truthful in that you will get no help from the Australian govt if you come here.

You will not have any problem getting help from the average person here, just not from anyone in a position of authority.
