Hi there,

I've been offered a job in Male as an English teacher and I might be starting next January 2014.

Can anybody tell me how easy is to spend an afternoon in the beaches at the islands around Male? Meaning, are beaches private and for only use to those staying in the resorts? How much and how long does it take to go to the closest islands?

Is there any limitation on clothes? I mean can you wear shorts or mini skirts? or is it advisable not to? or to what extent is that possible?

And finally, I'm offered acommodation, but how much is to buy food pero month? Approximately of course.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Forget about miniskirts or shorts :)
better give them a proper farewell before coming to Maldives :D

Hi Damaris,
Male is the capital city and we really do not have any beach apart from a very small area known as Artificial beach mainly used by kids and families during weekends. Hulhu Male is kind of suburbs about 20 minutes by ferry. There you have beaches and also other inhabited islands around couple of hours away got beaches. None of those beaches are considered private beaches where you can be in bikini. There are several resorts around with private beaches to their guests. It's not easily accessible unless you know some one from these resorts and it's quite expensive. However when you start living in Male you will get to know other expats and perhaps locals with similar contacts. We have some europeans working and I know they do visit resorts from time to time. In Male clothing is best to be from shoulder down to your knees. If you are going to a beach in Hulhu Male perhaps T shirt and a decent short will be right.
Cost of food depends a lot on how you eat. Roughly I would say you can do with 3-400$ a month if you are not going a speciality restaurant.
BTW Which school are you joining?
All the best.

HI,

The closest Islands to male would be Vilingili and Hulhumale, both are inhabited, the dress codes on local island are still more conservative, I have many friends who wear pretty short dresses and skirts when they go for dinner on a special occasion. on male and hulhumale this is ok . ( but please be aware that you might be in the spotlight of everyone if you do wear one :) and for shorts totally ok.

going to a nearby island, i would say Kurumba, Fulmoon Sheraton, Taj, Anantara, paradise would be amonst the closest resorts where you can find easy transportation, all f them have quite frquest trips from and to airport. most of them charge you US20.00 per entry for day use. some of them may charge you something for the transfer too.

Kurumba has  DJ night every thursday night and they have a ferry to pick up guests from male around 7 and dropoff at 12mid night.

quite few options.. honestly its not that difficult, but at first it might be a challenge to find out who can approve you to visit the hotels.

there is a nearby island called maafushi, where they have quite a few guest houses, and they also have a reserved beach for guests, and you can be in bikinis here.

if you are planing to cook at home, you can manage with USD300, also depends on your lifestyle it can double :)

on one of my previous posts i have given a price list, you can checkit out and will have a very god idea of what it might cost you.

cheers
