Hello everyone!

I am moving to Ukraine within two months and I will be staying for at least 8 months. In those months I would like to learn Russian, but so far every school or institute that I found is quite expensive. Anyone has tips or tricks on this matter?

Thanks in advance,

Martijn

Hi Martijn,

Welcome to expat-blog!

I suggest you to go through the Language institutions in Kiev section, where you might help you find what you are looking for. :)

Thank you,

David.

I have been looking through that, but I think they are quite expensive since I would like to follow Russian course around 2 hours a day, 5 days a week.

I thought that I might be able to find a student who is becoming a Russian teacher or something in that form that would like to earn money and take me on as a private pupil.

Easy! Find a local teacher, they will be happy with extra money. You can even do a "trade" your English for their Russian

If you went to France would you be looking to learn Italian?  You may not realize it but the official language is Ukrainian not Russian.

Hi Martijn,

This is very easy, go to the largest online classified Slando and place an Advertisement looking for a Russian teacher in the "Work" section slando.ua/rabota/ (Yes you can place the ad in English). As afar as bguran's comment, yes the "Official" language is Ukrainian, but Russian is most widely spoken language in Ukraine. Since 2000 I've lived in Zaporozhye, Kharkiv and now Kiev and the only place where Ukrainian is the dominant language is in Western Ukraine. In fact, I know many Ukrainians who don't even know Ukrainian. Matter of fact the leaders of Ukraine have trouble with their Ukrainian, because Russian was the Official language until after the fall of the Soviet Union. So unless you will be living in Lviv or the surrounding areas then Russian is your best choice of languages to learn. Of course that is my opinion and no disrespect to bguran3.

Good luck,
Craig

Thank you that is very helpful, Cstoddard. I will do that.

And Bguran3, yes I am aware of the fact that Ukranian is the national language, but since I am going to live in Kiev with my Ukranian girlfriend who speaks more Russian than Ukranian I have chosen for Russian, as well as it is more useful in other countries. I do not neglect the Ukranian language, especially since my girlfriend told me she thinks it is a lot prettier than Russian.

*ps: I have been living in France for a year, it would be hell of a job to learn Italian*

Hoi!
Mijn naam is Liubov.
