3G internet speeds.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the speed of 3G wireless data service in HCMC.

What is the best provider in terms of reliability and speed *within* Saigon (D1 and D3)?

Currently, I'm with Mobifone on their MIU package (50K a month, throttled after 600Mb) but the speeds are often glacial and sometimes pages just fail to load. I thought that was just the state of the infrastructure, but I was in Nha Trang last weekend and got crystal clear VOIP service when I was on a boat near Hon island... cut to being back in the city and the internet slowed down to a crawl again. Thinking of moving to their M70 package (70K a month, 1Gb limit) just to see if they're throttling the MIU package.

Is Viettel or Vinaphone any better?

I current use Vina, it is OK. I think maybe the network there is not good, if you change to 70K, i think it will be same situation.

I use Vinaphone and pay as I go - no plan. I just wait until they have a promotion for 50% bonus before I recharge. I never have problems with 3G speed, but do have problems with 3G coverage. But that's just Vietnam. Frankly, I surprised it's as good as it is.

Chinhngo: thanks for your input.

Saigonmonkey: yup, same here, I top up when they have a promotion. Spotty coverage is par for the course - I'm actually surprised that 3G even works given how little it costs here. Still, wouldn't mind paying a little extra for reliability within HCMC at least.

Does anyone use Viettel? I've heard that they're owned by the military and offer more consistent service, is that true?

edit: starting to think it might be an issue with my phone... everything seemed to work better before I upgraded from my iphone 4.

I am using 3G of Vietel by the fast connect (USB), i am living in Bien Hoa and using the 3G sim card. The spead is good since i can work on net all day without any problem and it takes about 5-10K per day / depend on the down load data.

From what I know, the 3G in HCMC either works or is very slow. But then again speed is subjective.

Are you trying to view a webpage full of images during peak hour? Nope, that's not a good idea. From my 2 weeks here so far, I've realized that - don't expect 3G to work all the time and if works, be happy. When outside, grab a drink around the local shops and ask for the wifi passwords and get a slightly more decent signal strength to access my emails or Google Maps.

Even at home, sometimes the ADSL connection goes crazily laggy. Rebooting the modem does not help. I'm going to try get a ADSL Cisco modem and see if that helps but chances are, the network is heavily over-subscribed. I'll update here if I get the chance within the next 2 months.

p.s Get a UPS or something, I had 2 x 30 seconds blackouts in my apartments last week, the first killed the modem. The 2nd took 6 hours before it decided to work again.

As I said before, fair enough: we're paying next to nothing for 3G here, and frankly the fact that it works more often than it doesn't is pretty impressive.

Subscribed to Mobifone's M70 package just now, will be back with feedback later on. If not, I'm switching to Viettel as a few people I've spoken to have mentioned that it's more reliable.

I have used Vinaphone 3G on Mobile phone, i can read news, can load on Face book, can down load the priute... It is OK (Slower ADSL or Fiber ofcource) however, it is OK to use.

When i am working with Laptop i use Viettel 3G (USB), it is worked OK too. I can call Video on Skype, i can download drawing from email with some seconds, I can visit many website in the same time, even visit the wedsite with alot of pictue. Even i am write this comment by using the Viettal 3G USB :). I think it work fine, only problem is that this service is charged alitle more expensive than ADSL service.

Viettel is good.

Anecdotal info from sample size of one, but the 3G on my phone is a lot faster after switching to the M70 plan. I can even stream video without too much stuttering now. Trouble is, at this rate I'll go through 1GB in two weeks

I find that when the 3G gets slow here,
just go outside and point the phone up in the sky.
Works a treat!

^^ Very good advice if you're tired of your smartphone and want to donate it to the Bag-snatchers and Pickpocket Association of HCMC.

We are using Viettel 3G. Not much problem yet :D

I just got a new simcard with Vina (was previously Beeline, I KNOW!) and their 3G is pretty good. Though some times I do get a drop in 3G to Edge as I'm stationed in District 12, not sure if that's a factor in coverage. I have Viettel on my iPad and the quality is the same from my point of view.
