I was in D2 today, and I saw a thief wanted to steal a white female's bag,so I went and tell this woman to be careful, and the thief  send a "greeting"to me...that is fun....

cang_nduc

why not wait for the thief to make a move then you can stop him later, that'd be funnier :)

Ng0720

And then will be too late, the woman will lost her money or something important ..

hi Ng0720,

Like you said, i feel it really fun, too :)
I see, your words are a warning to careful with our property when we go out, especially with foreigner.
Anyhow, i found that you are a kind and "brave". If I were you, I would have done a such act like you

You know, The best thing to do is not bring valuables with you (such as Jewelry, Earrings, Necklaces, ...) when you go down street.

Thanks and Take care,
lutubu

mikeymyke

Yeah be really careful.

laidbackfreak

Sadly D2 is a target for thieves, it is well populated with expats who tend to carry too much in way of valuables\cash with them. Many do not take simple precautions and leave themselves open to attack.
Having said that I know the thieves target locals too, I have a VN friend who runs a restaurant there and she was robbed in the same way.

It's a big city and sadly like every other country in the world there are some bad people around and will steal from others, be careful, be aware and be sensible in your activities.

Stay safe people and have fun, life's not that scary here really :)

khanh44

yeah few weeks ago my cousin had her brand new motorbike stolen in the parking lot of one of D2 biggest grocery shop with a security guard watching the bikes. She's been driving an old beat up motorbike for years with no problems.

What do you mean by "greeting"?
Sorry I'm new.
Btw thanks for sharing. I should be careful around Vietnam.

I've seen someone try to steal my friends bag...TWICE!!!!! Yup, try. She's a tough one, it must be that Irish blood :P

I had my gold watch stolen somewhere in the process of getting on the cyclo to getting off it. Since that incident in 2002 never wore any watch on my wrist again.

Really?
That's impressive.
But why did your friend make the same mistake about bag security the second time?
I hope she learnt her lessons well.

The thing is, she's as safe as she can be. It was a small bag, always in front of her body, strapped over the shoulder, and she always seems to have her hand on it. I suppose that's why they've never been able to take it away from her.

Do y'all think that white foreigners are targeted more? I'm a foreigner, but I'm sure as hell not white, and I've never had an experience like this (knock on wood). Is it because the gods are in my favor or because I don't stick out too much as long as my back is covered and I have a mask on??? haha

That's weird....you didn't even notice it being stolen??? In that case, maybe it just broke and fell off or something like that?

My wife just got robbed at knife point 2 weeks ago in broad day light.

my advice to the ladies is try not to walk alone, always go with a friend.

Also I had friends who lost their items while they were shopping in supermarkets, especially big ones like Maximart, Big C, etc. so pay attention to your pockets or strangers getting too close to you.

I am sorry to hear that.
Can you say at all whether it was a quiet street or parking area or?

Hanabishi

It was a typical street, wife was there to visit a construction company, before she could get in the door two guys hurried over and pull out a knife, snatch her bag and phone and off they go.

Ng0720

hahah,greeting = insult

Ng0720

Knife!!!!that is dangerous!!!if someone pull out a knife,I will say:take everything ...

mikeymyke

For me, no knife, thief is going to be eating out of a straw for the rest of his life.  Seriously, I hate thieves.

Thief can have whatever he wants. Not worth your life over such trivial material possessions. That's why I don't carry much of anything on me.

But if he threatens my girl he's going to get a beating.

If you do beat a thief, is that illegal in Vietnam?  Or are you only allowed to restrain him?

Peanut_oreo

Is pepper spray illegal?

laidbackfreak

YES, get caught with it and you are in deep trouble.

Peanut_oreo

Is there anything legal? Slingshot? anything?

No all weapons are illegal.

You could carry a tool of some sort (screwdriver etc. and I would not condone it) but you are on thin-ice if you cannot prove you need to be carrying it for a legitimate reason. eg job or in case of motorbike break down etc. But if it's 10pm and your drunk without a bike could be tough to prove....

Just be sensible don't carry a lot of cash\valuables and don't make yourself a target..

i lost my bikes at different times, but for the  same reason, bike thieves cut my lock off by the huge locking pliers ,So the best way to keep your bike out of thief is left you bike in the parking lot.

dtcali

Best bet is strip yourself before heading out. I carry a bit of cash in my pocket and maybe a credit card. No wallet, no watches and no fancy "motobye"

and please ignore the avatar.

just restrain him...the locals around you will do the beating trust me and the end result isn't pretty, i've seen several times with motorbike thieves and snatch thieves getting caught ;)
