Hi,
Melita has launched it's Global Connector
Could someone please explain, if this means I can access BBC iPlayer etc? What is involved? I have always downloaded from the internet but this will mean I can get UK tv??
Thank you in advance, to anyone who can give me an idiots guide to it all!!
Caroline
It certainly looks that way, which is an odd thing for an internet company to do, as I didn't think it was strictly legal?
There are ways of watching UK TV for free via the internet though, without using a VPN service
Lol, the wink doesn't help me though! Things like Netflix and other stuff? I'm sorry, I've been here years and there have been various 'things' to get better telly like Satilite, dream boxes, etc and I never bothered because of costs, so I've downloaded all the time. and have never understood the lingo that goes with it all!

legality is like pregnancy, you either are or you aren't

Google 'Android Media TV Box' & 'XBMC'
You can get a box off Ebay or Amazon from around £50-£100, pre-loaded with software/apps to let you watch pretty much anything you like...

Well it obviously must be legal in Malta, just can't imagine any internet provider in the UK providing such a service lol...
i doubt any live/ realtime UK programming / viewing is legal here - i suspect catch up is more likely to be touching on legal but live defo not... as there will be copyrights incorporated into live/realtime screening.
and even if it was via this global connector i cant see it being free.
Just noticed its subject to this condition
"The Melita Global Connector is available to all Melita customers who already have both Digital or HD TV and Internet on the same account"
Interesting but not that useful to me personally. I don't use any VPNs to access other countries TV channels anyway. Though, I reckon some people might find it quite good.
i use overplay.net but its like 10usd per month, though the connection is really good and i can watch SkyGo everywhere in the world with it

Do you have to have a Sky account for that?
Yes from my mother in Germany.
if you use the website filmon.com can get uk tv, most of the freeview channels, without costing you anything and is legal!
You can record programmes and view later as well as watching in real time. We have a tablet attached to tv but also save films to our laptop which we then download and save so have something to watch if telly is not good.
Depending how much or what uk tv you want may be the better option for you as very easily to do (as like you not very technical) and free.

Great thanks, I will give that a try.
BBCi player is free to download but you need a UK ip address, so I think that's where the connector will come into play.
I will try filmon.com first, to see if there is enough to watch. It's mainly for the children, as cable channels repeat stuff and it would be nice for them to hear a good (ish) Britsh accent for a change!
I also use filmon and it's not too bad. The only bad thing I noticed so far is that depending on the programme's popularity or the time of the day you're watching, sometimes becomes unwatchable as its stream keeps stopping. Maybe due to the amount of people that are logged in at that same time.
In regards to kids channels, not sure if you'll have a huge choice Caroline. Hope you like it anyway.

If you don't need to watch in real time, record it and no problems, also can skip the ads.

With filmon can get all the bbc channels including the two children's, depending on ages. Also all itv, channels 4+5 and under film category Film4.
Cannot get programmes shown previously, but all seem to be repeated at some point, either on same channel (normally in afternoon or middle of night) or one of there sister channels.
Thanks Fusspot. I had heard about filmon but I had presumed people were paying to have their ip address moved...I never thought to ask if it's free lol!
Ok, so next question...
I would normally stream my downloaded programs from windows media player onto the telly. My telly is VERY old, how do I get filmon onto the telly, or is it not possible? (I stream through my Melita box at the moment.)
DOES IT HAVE SCART CONNECTIONS?
I use FilmOn, and put on to TV from my tablet via HDMI. Excellent picture if HD broadcast, otherwise good enough for the little we watch. However a great plus is the ability to record, as much as you like, if you pay for it at their good prices.
Also use Eurosport player.
PS at tip, always make sure you have the latest edition of the app, or you will get intermittent breaks.
its an old tv Red so its unlikely to have the hdmi port hence the question of a scart socket.... from there its easy with a range of adaptors and A-V cables. It does of course also depend on the connectors available at the pc end too
Yes it has one scart...what should I look for on my laptop?
You can buy convertor cables. Look at your laptop to identify the video out socket something lkike either of these two shown
If your laptop has a socket like this
That's an HDMI socket then get a cable like this
but sizes can vary of HDMI socket from standard to mini to micro.
If it looks like this
then get one of these
However, there are other variants. have a look at this article:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/output-video-pc-laptop-tv/
or go to a local techie. Or see me and I'll sort it.
May be on mainland over next 2 weeks, father arrives 00.50 tomorrow and meeting him at Luqa but will also be taking him out and about.
the 15 pin D cable carrys video normally but doesnt normally carry audio so may have to get the convertor cables to go between the spkr socket on the laptop to the IN phlips/rca/cinch sockets on the back of the tv/scart adaptor

Correct. There may also be other alternative inputs/outputs so best to take a photo of all the sockets on PC and TV post on here or let me see it or get a local techie to see it.
You will have to select the relevant input on the TV and perhaps select output from laptop.
All depends upon makes, models and ages of equipment.
sounds complicated but it isnt really - once you have done it a few times its easy
Or another option in case you don't mind watch saved programmes is save the content you want to watch on your PC, then via the melita box, go to the media centre section and browse the saved files from you PC's library. I reckon it should work as you most certainly have both the PC and the melita box connected on the same network.
Great stuff guys...
Mick, I won't be able to get the cable for a couple of weeks, so if I have problems, I'll talk to you on facebook...unless you are over again when your father goes back? (to the airport)
I always thought you needed some kinda box and things and been too ashamed to ask in case I didn't understand the answer! So thanks for putting it simply for me.
I really miss having choice and 'flicking' through channels...Probably still find nothing on lol
I use the Melita box that way already Antonio but not all formats go through and as I said, it will be nice to hear some English accents (compared to the American!)as I mostly download American series.
Thanks again everyone for your imput.
Hope you get it all sorted Caroline....
......here is a little 'tip' (not sure if it is any good in Malta, however, for our UK readers).
If you have Google Chrome on your laptop and a 'Netflix' account you can download an 'add-on' called "hola unblocker" instal it then run the little beaut. In the top corner of the screen is a little 'flame' icon which allows you to toggle between UK and USA Netflix..........and as we all know there is loads more to see on the USA version (some great complete series).
As always
Mike
.............Oh!
forgot to mention that the 'hola unblocker' actually acts as a sort of 'free vpn' so you can view websites that are "not available in your country".
My lad uses it for Netf1ix but I suppose you could try it with UK sites that are blocked wherever you are.
If anyone gives it a go I would be interested to see how it is.....if not I'll give it a try when I'm over in November.
Happy watching folks
Mike
Thanks Mike, it works a treat!!!
Also noted ZenMate and Stealthy, both for Chrome.
Will try those later but someone is calling for Downton Abbey!!!
