Hello To All

Full Monty

Hi everyone,

I just arrived in Riyadh a couple of days ago (I think the term is either 'fresh off the boat' or 'fresh meat' lol) and, contrary to my usual habit, thought I'd venture out further than my immediate colleagues for social mores. Not that my immediate colleagues aren't nice and genuine enough people (I teach in a male university) but I can get into the habit of work and then more work.

This is my second stint in the Kingdom; third city but first time working in Riyadh. So far my immediate impressions are positive although I came here with fairly low expectations, as an old friend worked here before and she told me lots or horror stories. So far I've noticed the driving is better here than elsewhere and Panda has more choice for my English tastes.

Being quite solitary I'm rubbish at sport (but willing to have a go) and have media, recipes and travel stories to chat about/swap.

Welcome to the sands!  You'll also find that LuLu (as well as Tamimi) has a lot of British/American favorites.

Coming with low expectations was a wise move--it's the people who come with idealistic visions who end up disappointed.

Thanks, Alliecat! I'll check out those places over the next week. I'm not leaving for a well-earned break as, TBH, I haven't earned it yet! Will be mostly working at home with occasional trips out to stretch my legs.

I reckon Tamimi and/or LuLu will be on my to-do list, as well as a park or two (I heard they're accessible to wandering singletons like myself, during the week). That's if the weather cools somewhat, else I might have a rethink.
