I saw somewhere that rent can be asked to be paid in $, is it true?

Thank you,

James

Hi Bruce,

Given that you can't open a Brazilian bank account unless you have a VIPER Permanent Visa and RNE and the fact that foreign checks aren't accepted by banks in Brazil it would be kind of difficult to pay any other way than in cash. Generally the landlord will call around once a month to collect or will give you an account number to deposit to in an ATM.

Actually, It is possible to pay in Dollars here in Sao Paulo!
There are many estate agents who cater for American Expats, however here's the catch! The appartments are top Luxury proerties of more than 250m squared, and they are going for between 5-20000 reis per month!! I'm assuming they operate in a similar way to hotels in that there are a mountain of service charges and you are paying their exchange rate and not the real one. Also, you would be paying from an international bank, so charges would occur there as a guess. As Mr Woodward said, there's no chance of you running down to the landlord with an envelope of greenbacks and a smile on your face!!

Good luck!
