Registering a birth in Scotland

Post new topic

David

Hi,

About to have a baby or already had children? Let's share your experience about the paperworks for registering a birth in Scotland.

What are the formalities to obtain a birth certificate?

What is the procedure to follow if both parents are of the same nationality or for a mixed couple?

Thank you in advance for participating,

David

Hello David,

Congratulations, first of all!

In the hospital where the baby was born they shoudl give you a paper with the birth details: place, time, etc, ...

That paper you have to take it to any registry office in Scotland (you should have a list of the closest ones to the hospital in that same paper).

To register the birth one or two parents must be present (two if they are not married). There is a small fee to pay and you are given the choice of a summarised certificate or a full certificate, which is more useful when applying for British Pasports, etc...

I forgot to mention you are given 3 weeks to register the birth.

That is pretty much all. Just registered my daughter on Friday, so its fresh in my mind.

Cheers,

E
