overcoming their sense of inferiority by demanding that they be called by their professional title instead of their actual names?
They do it when introducing themselves "Hi, my name is DOCTROR mohammed" or even "Engineer such and such" and yes, it really happens like that.. aaall the time.
I couldn't believe my ears the first time, I thought the guy was joking and laughed (embarrassing everyone), but then it happened again with someone else, and again, and again....
Don't you love the American tradition of... complaining a lot?
Bill Bryson got it right!

I call it ambition and initiative. and yes I love it--it works!!
Oh, almost forgot:
It ain't just Libya. My sis-in-law is "Barrister" and another one at NNPC is "Engineer". NNPC couldn't engineer how to run a bath, but wtf....
In certain areas on the world, titles carry a lot of status, I personally don't have a problem with it unless the individual makes you address them with their full title and it happens to be 'professor of yada yada yada yada, gained at the university of .......' . Get used to Libya my friend, accept the bits that annoy you, and embrace the good bits(their are many) and you will enjoy it a lot more.

You've never visited Germany then
Good point Horizontal Harry. I guess he didn't
It's not just Germany..... I think Austrians are even more particular and even the wife will be frau doctor!!
What's the point? to me this says: "hey, look at me, I desperately aspire to be someone of significance and my less than mediocre intelligence prevents me from realizing that most people don't give a dead rat's $hit how important I think I am. Hey, look at me look at me look at me. No! stop talking, just stop talking and look at me, me the great. I can't hear ya. I can't hear you over the mellifluous sound of my awesomeness! lalalaaalllalala"
Soooo grown up indeed.
From reading your recent posts I would say it is you yourself that has the "hey, look at me, I desperately aspire to be someone of significance etc. etc." attitude.
This forum is an Expat help forum,so please, if you are not happy here, leave and go to a Libyan forum.
I'll hold the door open for you on your way out.

Dear Horizontal Harry,
Go suck a railroad spike.
Sincerely,
MoEl
I think Harry's point is valid, especially after that stupid comment.
Easy, easy now. haven't got plenty of spikes to go round.
Whatever floats your boat, honey.

Uh-oh!! you're making them wonder.
MoEL said "EVEN engineers" !!!!!!!!
I come from the UK where highly professional engineers are equated with car mechanics by the masses and I find it pretty refreshing to have that professionalism recognised - although I don't try to use it myself.
I have come across this previously in Germany, Italy and Austria, coutries where engineering is valued and admired.
I occasionally get "bey" after my name from my turkish colleagues which I thoroughly enjoy :-)

...that's a good one "dirty-Harry" : )
cheers

Well, aren't car mechanics engineers?
well, in my opinion, its ok for someone to add "Engineer" Abu while introducing themselves..
But i think its NOT OK that half of the ppl who introduce themselves as Engineers here do not have a recognized certificate to go with it, where some didnt even take an Engineering Course to start with.
It's like meeting an Architect the other day and she only did 2 years in university for the course. I asked her to draw something for me and she said everything is on Google Sketch. She needs internet.
MoEl has got an issue with Libya I guess. as he is originally Libyan and wants to be treated like an American without any success, he started to search for only the negative things in Libya, although it is his own country and he should try to be more positive towards it. there is a Libyan proverb suits his case : only Dog denies his roots.
Go on, dear We're here to help you.
And it seems like YOU have an issue with your origins? I mean, wtf would voluntarily describe themselves as "mancunian"?
lol. easy on the dude, sandman, he seems to be easily traumatized.
Please elaborate, mancunian, what else is bothering you? Any strange voices today?

He's lucky he didn't describe himself as a Smoggie, a Monkey-Hanger or a Scouser
lol.. real lol!!
For the last couple hours or so, I got the best ab workout: laughing my guts off.
Could you please stop provocation now ?
MoEl, your comments are proving my point, and you can help by changing your ignorant attitude in your posts.
sandman, I'm calling my self Mancunian just dreaming to reach the first level of your superiority Mr sand.
Moel as usually should be treated as spam.
really need a software to skip his massages in a thread...
However, as an engineer myself, i do not understand putting this up there as if prof, dr of MD.
I think that should be left for academic staff, doctors and lawyers.
and maybe just maybe clowns by birth:) hear moel?
