50% Discounts for Senior Flights and other activities

Post new topic

smitty88

I confirmed the fact that legal Ecuadorian residents over 65 (with cedula) are entitled to 50% discounts for all flights on all airlines (excluding taxes and fees) beginning and ending in Ecuador at both the LAN and American Airlines offices in Quito.
I recently automatically got the discount when I bought round trip tickets UIO-LAX through Expedia (they do have my DOB) as well as a flight to Manta. However, just how and when the discounts are obtained is still elusive. Does AA only give the discount at their office here and on their regular economy fare?
Travelocity told me to contact the airline for discounts yet when I contact airlines directly I am unable to get satisfactory answers by phone and via email I tend to get no reply at all.
It is clear that we are entitled to this discount under Ecuadorian law and I would like to see what experience others have in trying to get it. It looks like the airlines are certainly not trying to promote the idea!

You must obtain the discount in person at a ticketing office or in person. It was the same way in Colombia when I received a government discount. In the United States you gave them a corporate code and if they wanted to verify eligibility they would do it randomly. Unfortunately, in South America everything is like this - in person, no faith in others. :)

And yes, it needs to be booked directly through AA. I highly doubt you are going to be able to get the discount through Expedia. You should have 72 hours to cancel your ticket if it is not too late.

No problem if you use a travel agent, that's what they're paid to do and they know the ins and outs of acquiring the 50%. FYI, if AA is doing this it is the only USA line I;ve heard of that does. It maybe that to use Ecuadorian gateways they must to comply with regulations?? Otherwise Tapa, Lan and several other SA lines will extend the discount if it originates and terminates in Ecuador.

USE an agent and avoid the lost time and frustrations.

As I said above,       "I recently automatically got the discount when I bought round trip tickets UIO-LAX through Expedia." That means that I GOT the discount, although I am not confident for the future.

Some participants do not seem able to understand simple English. Yes, there was a pvs discussion, with inept and wrong replies. I quoted both the English and Spanish versions of the law.

As I thought was clear I said, "I confirmed the fact that legal Ecuadorian residents over 65 (with cedula) are entitled to 50% discounts for all flights on all airlines (excluding taxes and fees) beginning and ending in Ecuador (in person) at both the LAN and American Airlines offices in Quito. " I do not know how to make it any clearer.

No I do not have an AA card, and I DID get the discount, and it WAS through Expedia on October 4th UIO-LAX-UIO on TACA, (although I am not confident Expedia will be consistent). Although I did also get the discount on a RT flight to Manta recently, the amount saved was small as the basic price is low - I just wanted to test it.

I am really looking for people's ACTUAL  experiences, not ever more uninformed opinion.
