Living in Xiamen

We are considering volunteering for an assignment in Xiamen for 3-5 years.
How many European expats are living in Xiamen ? Are there expat clubs ? More importantly: how to deal with Chinese signs, branding in supermarkets, etc. ? Does anybody speak English in the Chinese community ? What type of activities do expat wifes do while in Xiamen ? How big is soccer in Xiamen ?
Please give us some basic answers to our questions, so we can make a more balanced decision.

Hi,

There are about 3,000 ex-pats in Xiamen, although not sure how many are European, but would guess it is the larger part of that total that are from Europe.

I'm not aware of any ex-pat clubs as such, but there are a few bars where ex-pats will hang out.

Chinese signs and branding is not problem, a lot of it is also in English.

Quite a few Chinese will have basic English, or better. Generally, for most younger Chinese, anyone who has been to high school will have basic English, and those who have been to university will usually have a higher level.

No idea what ex-pat wives do in Xiamen, same as anywhere else, I guess.

I don't follow soccer, but as far as I know, soccer isn't big in Xiamen, although there is an ex-pat rugby team, I believe.

Hi Xiamen is a great city.There are lots of foreigners and you can manage very well here.
I don't know about expat wives,but don't expect it to be like Europe it IS China! However a short stay here is a great experience if you are up for it.
I don't think it's a good idea if you are inflexible people but if you are a little adventurous you can have a good time here.
Lots of bars,restaurants and places to hang out.Better to try to meet local people there are many who speak English adn will be interested to meet you.
