Unlocking an iPhone in Quito

Post new topic

BobH

My daughter got an iPhone 5 shortly before I left the States, and she gave me her iPhone 4. Does anyone know a reliable place in Quito to get it unlocked?

Any other advice about using it here would also be appreciated -- e.g., what plans/service are best.

I know to be very careful about using it in public -- a couple locals have already warned me that iPhones are popular targets for theft.

Bob, the downside to I phones are no SIM cards making unlocking a nuisance. I suggest you contact them directly to determine their options and costs. I'm certain you'll get some feedback here as well but, just for %^% & grins I'd check Apple's folks.
As for plans, I phone unlocked works well with T mobile and right now they have some really great plans called simple choice and they really are simple choice with no hidden nonsense and oh yeah NO CONTRACTS!! I have their $60 buck plan giving me unlimited texting, calls and 2.5 GH data. It includes WIFI as well so if in a hotel you can connect with the hotels WIFI and get calls in and out free. No roaming in Ecuador to.

Have you already talked to the carrrier?

Thanks -- both of you referred me to Apple, and it turns out Apple refers me to AT&T. AT&T says that only a current or former AT&T customer can request an unlock code -- so it looks like my daughter is the one who will have to make the request.

Nothing is simple, it seems, but at least now I'm on the right path. Thanks again.

I've had 3 iPhones unlocked at Caracol (it's at the snail looking building on Naciones Unidas- across from CCI). There are little places there that will unlock (but you have to leave the phone for a day).

Thanks, Amy -- someone else has mentioned that place. I'm going to wait to see what AT&T has to say.
