hi,
I'd say that it's more than your average recession Iceland is dealing with, and it's still definitely a reality, with unemployment still around 9-10%. Tourism has been down significantly already due to the uncertainty of the volcano, and the fact that a large swath of popular destinations have been covered by ash.
I know plenty of foreigners (usually from EU countries) who've come here to work with horses or on farms, or in greenhouses or in nature tourism (leading hiking and adventure trips), but to get this kind of position I think you need to come earlier in the year, as most places have hired for the summer already.
If you've got higher education in any of those fields, you could look at the universities but even they are having to drastically reduce their operating costs in the next months. In general I'd say it's not the greatest time to try to move here, but if you can develop some personal connections (like by emailing some tour companies or farms or coming to visit) then they might be able to offer you better advice closer to the source.
