Why are some foreigners - especially expats - hostile and patronized?

I'm 64 & I think you must be the loud mouth type they were talking about. To group every
older expat into the group you describe shows a lack of intelligence & class. I try to treat
everyone that deserves it with respect. I don't go out drinking & chasing young girls. I
don't have too, I already have the best of the lot.

Loud mouthed?, quite the opposite in fact, I try to keep myself to myself, ( which anyone knows from living here for while, ( and sometimes much less ), is practically impossible ). I give respect , but more than not is is not returned, ( you have to be family, or someone important in VN to get that ). Ah, but you said treat everyone with respect, who ' deserves ' it, and how do we work that one out, must be that sign on their head that says, I deserve respect?
What gives you the idea that ALL older Ex Pats were in this group?, I actually complimented these older members???? you may think you have the 'best ' of everything in VN, but eyesight isn't one of them , try reading the post again.
Thanks for the laugh, ' intelligence and class ', in VN???? Made my day.
Now where's that bee swatter gone????
Im not sure what your baning on about to be honest. Are you saying that after living here for a few years that in genaral that the people of Vietnam are a good bunch. Or are you saying dont trust any of them . Im confused. We have a lot of sayings in England, such as a fool and his money are soon parted, theres no fool like an old fool, dont shit and fall back in it, and dont piss up my back and tell me its raining. I come from London, and no one these days would stop and say hello to you, if they did you would think, hello im going to get muged. The question that was asked was why are ex pats hostile, and patronzing. I can only speak for myself that im no way hostile and i wouldent patronize any Viets. Ofcorse you have to be carefull in any country that your not going to be taken for a mug.
Im not saying all Viets have got wings on there backs, some would rip me off as soon as look at me if i would let em. What i have found is there more friendly than the folk back home, but on the flip side its like united nations back there and English is a second langue now ( im not joking ) . I come here for a better life and ive got it..
Yer im here, and yes i can understand her question now. Patronizing, wouldent be you would it.
Question for you,,, are you on strong medication, or recreational drugs,,, if not i think you should be.
So I got this morning early to search out the NCAA final game.A nice VIET bartender, went to the computer and up loaded the game, here in Nha Trang. The waitress ask if i like anything to eat or drink, just water was my response. As sat watching the game 2 men came in for breakfast(Russian),they were very rude and demanding. You would think the were the Czar or Puttins right hand man.I look and the waitress and watch her smile disappear.I was so happy to see the interaction and sadden at the same time.Maybe now i won't be the ugly American,I had a coffee watch the game and thanked the bartender for finding it for me.Of course i left a tip.So iguess we all have a lot to learn from each other.Like i said i know i am a visitor to this beau tiful country. Mr. Bluenz who has lived so long he knows that the ethnic minority poor are rich from selling off their mountainous land, have multi-storied homes and expensive bikes. I wouldnt be surprised if Mr. Banned, who believes the poor here are stupid and lazy because they wouldnt reciprocate his Viet-speak, returns and defend western superiority.
I can read a lot of comments about poor/rich...
But, what are you actually talking about?
Money?
Ah, ok, considering only poor/rich people this side, I can understand many comments.
Not sure this is the best richness though.
And I definitely get bored with these supposed "knowing-everything" people as those who consider all people from one country are all the same.

Just read this thread...
To me it sounds like many posters have got bees up their backsides... and on both sides of the argument.
Mr El Jost,
I went to the doctor this morning to see if i had a bee up my arse, he said no , but you have got a cake up your arse,,,,, so i said have you got any cream for it !!
wow this topic is heating up. do you guys/girls wants to meet up and have ice cream and coffee to cool this situation?
I don't know which foreigner she is referring to but I believe I'm not that bad. Come have a drink with me and I will show you.
Hey guys!
My experience is we can't understand or know someone just by their post in some posts (well, just parts of them just like small pieces of a kaleidoscope doesn't make the whole one). Online discussion usually get people go further than what they really are and what they really want to express. Maybe it's because of the lack of eye contact and body languages, which make people more comfortable and easier to understand whom they are talking to.
I hope we can chill out and share opinions in good manner. It helps you not to laugh at yourselves after meeting the other people face to face and say "Wow! He's nicer than I thought." And, please, don't scare me out so that I will not share any of my emotional thought later! ^_^
Anybody wanna drink beers with a young dynamic friendly attractive pregnant woman instead of heating up on here?

Great, someone with a sense of humour, you newbies are so easy to take the piss out of .
But it would be nice if some could learn how to use the ' quote ' button, then the rest of us might have some sort of clue what they are ' baning' on about.
I'm amazed how long some members can hold a grudge as well, lucky there wasn't a Frenchman amongst those Russians and Germans, ( there usually is ).
Scarletvn , if some people could actually read the posts properly , maybe they might react differently, and not attack the posters, we are all pretty tough sitting behind our computers.
I have read your posts and you know everyone is different and that judging people is not wise. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience because that's all it was. It is also not wise or respectful to judge or comment on the way people look.
Remember we are all individuals, unique and that diversity is what makes the world interesting. Your attitude to helping others is admirable and I encourage you to keep up the good work.

Ok, Mr ODD, I'll take your bait this time, what a silly thing to say about your ethnic minority family, if they sold their mountainous land, they would have nowhere to build their multi-storied homes??????
I hope Mr Banned does put in another show, he runs rings around most of the people here, when it comes to intelligence, and experience in VN,etc, ( and that's what people don't like about him, especially the ones that can't handle a person with an opinion that is different from their own ).
Thanks but i dont want to cool down with ice cream, im just getting warmed up. The gloves are off and i ready for a fight.
And as for you who started all this, no i dont want to drink beer, and neighter should you , your pregnant,,, think of the baby and go and drink some milk!
I know how to joke, but do you know how to laugh ?

Youre the one who posted the idiotic tripe about ethnic minorities getting rich selling land lol. Its no surprise youre defending a repeatedly banned member who treats the local Vietnamese with disdain and condescension. People dont like him not for his opinions, some of which i do agree with, hes disliked because hes a prick. With his fat ass hed be lucky to walk one circle around me. Its expats like you and Chris Fox that consistently badmouth the locals that gives foreigners a bad reputation.

Yes, come round any time you like.
Specially for you I'll be serving cream tea with chocolate cake (instead of scones).

I'm laughing my ass off while reading through your posts right now.

Foreigners already had a bad reputation here, long before you and I ever came here.
And I'm not ' bad mouthing ' anyone, just stating facts and personal experiences , or are we not allowed to do that on here anymore. Why would I need to make up something bad about a person/race?, as long as they don't annoy me, ( and it was 2 yrs before my neighbours finally realised I don't need their company all the time, or ' advice ' on how to do nearly EVERYTHING ),
and once again, I wasn't referring to Ethnic people in general, but most VN farmers/landowners, ( AKA as Govt tenants ),
Also if you took the time to read, you will find there are a hell of a lot more Foreigners on these websites ' badmouthing VN ' , than the few that actually praise it. ( probably been living here for more than 5 minutes, no doubt ).
Thanks man,
But i still have loads of cake to finnish off. Its a shame because chocolate cake is my favorite,,, ant life a bitch, and then you end up marrying one. Maybe some other time.
Bluenz you have your opinions and i have mine. If i disagree with something youve posted then i will respond. And if you took the time to read your own postings then youll see that you included ethnic minorities in your "factual" ravings. Its funny when people treat others like shit then act surprised when its reciprocated.

Must be the alzhiemers kicking in again, ( but more likely brain damage from breathing so much VN smoke, pollution that is ), I do remember quoting about them having TV's, motorbikes, and cellphones, or is that non ' factual raving ', You must be super sensitive, who treating anyone like shit, and where's the surprise? I like surprises.

You don't sound like a Welshman.

Careful Jeff, you'll have the newbies complaining abut you calling a VN woman a bitch, i.e, 1st question will be, don't you love your wife?
No i pressed the wrong button, and now im a Welshman, could have been worse could have been a Russian
Jeff Brewster wrote:No i pressed the wrong button, and now im a Welshman, could have been worse could have been a Russian
I'd really love to see some Russians on this site, that would make things very interesting, who could we bag then?

Thet dont seem to catch on very quicly and get the hummerest side. Its like when i tell a joke to my wife and she dont get it. I then have to brake it down and by the time ive done that,,, its not funny any more. I had one girl on here, she dident have a Danny if i ws a wind up or serious. I feel like im wasting my time.

And luckily not easily offended , ( as a certain other nationality is, on this site ). You certainly have been around, been to VN yet?
El jost,,,

No, nearest I got was Singapore but that was years ago in the 60s. Was still at school then. My parents were there for a couple of years.

Your dead right, same with most people of limited English ability, I gave up telling my wife jokes a long time ago, ( also my French associate, I have to call him that , anything else would apparently mean stereo typing all Frenchman ), the good thing with VN's, is that they are so gullible, ( not to be confused with immature, that usually comes after their first beer ), they can be made to laugh very easily.

Ha, you don't even have to be fat to be accused of being hostile, no that's not it, it was treating people like shit?
Somehow, reading through this thread, I don't think that I could hack Vietnam. I remember as a kid in Singapore seeing the Chinese there sort of smiling and grinning at you, but you have no effing idea what they are thinking. Oh man, I reckon I'm going to get scolded for saying that.

Not sensitive but when someone makes a erroneous comment about the locals and present it as fact i will call them out on it. So dont get your depends in a bunch ok old man?

Hi
There's no reason why you should get scolded for that as it's a fact!
But it's their culture, their social way of being.
I used to work with many asians from many asian countries, and their side, they don't understand why in western countries we just say the things as they are, or for example say a simple "no" when they ask for something you don't want to do or you don't agree.
With their culture in mind, they think we are rude and have no respect for others.
This is just another way of being, another culture.
Not saying if it's worst or best, just different.
Everyone has to be a minimum open minded and at least try to understand that, and not judge with their own references and culture.
