Hello, I've been extremly lucky to secure a job with a Mauritian company earning 130,000mr per month with 30,000p/m accomoadation allowence.
I have a wife and 12 year old daughter also who are coming over with me. Will I be able to have a good standard of living or is everything ultra expensive such as: utillities bills, food, clothing etc.

I'm expecting my contract documents next week and then it will be 4 weeks after that, so, about end of July begining of August. Where would be the best place to live with other expats?

Cliffy.

Cliffy

Hello all you expats, would my electrical items in the UK work in Maurituis ?

Cliffy.

Hi Cliffy,
welcome to this great forum. I had arrived a few weeks ago and it is like a dream. We moved from Sydney to London in jan as expats but only after 5 months decided it was not for us and here we are. Your daughter will love it, mine certainly do.

Not to sure about the uk plugs, we are in a hotel which have a seperate outlet for them. But most of our stuff is Australian and we just use an converter which does the job.

Good luck with your move.

Hi Susan,
thanks for taking the time to reply.  Yes London in no way compares to maurituis does it? How old is your daughter? does she go to school there? I think I will be living in the North or NW, is that anywhere near you? Sorry to bombard you with questions but have so much I wont to know before we all come over.
What are shops like? where would you do your weekly food shop?
I think my wife (Gina) will be on later asking a whole lot more questions then me. If you dont wont to reply thats fine I know it's your time were taking up.

regards

Cliffy.

Hi Cliffy,
In Mauritius, it's 220 V everywhere but the plugs are of this type

Hi Cliffy,

Yes you will have a good quality life here. We arrived with a daughter who was 10 years old. She attended Clavis and Le Bocage and did very well winning a scholarship to study at university. We lived in the south-east but now live in the centre of the island as our daugther was doing too much travelling to attend school, friends and other events. Yes your appliances will work here. All the best for your move and your new life here in Mauritius.

Samuel, you should post this in the Classifieds!

Cliff,
Myself and my fiancé arrived in Mauritius back in late April from Dublin Ireland. We settled in the midlands in an area called Floreal and our first week was a shock, all we could notice are the messy streetscapes, lack of walking pavements and the messiness and the poor condition of the urban fabric of the towns. But I could tell you that it will take you a week to have your eyes adjusted and then you will only notice the beautiful landscapes, the natural beauty of the land and the lively nature of the hustle and bustle of the towns and the bazaars.

With your salary package you will live comfortably. We rent a small house in Floreal, which is a very nice neighbourhood, and our rent includes all the bills, and a daily maid and a gardener and all for 25K a month. I could give you an idea of our expenses per month which are similar to some of what the expats have been listing. But I think you will get a more realistic monthly expenses from someone with kids as we do not have kinds, YET..:)

As Suzan said, do not worry about plugs, you can buy loads of adaptors and I think most houses that have been built in the past 5 years have 2-way and 3-way plug systems.

There are several supermarket chains here, and we were able to find the same items that we had in Dublin, but there are things like Greek Yoghurt, fresh strawberries, fresh asparagus, nice sausages that seem to be a rarity. Many people here have told us to source out fresh meat butchers, chicken and good fish shops in place of buying these items from the supermarket. I would recommend that you do your weekly veg and fruit shopping from the weekly market which are held in every town, once or twice a week.

I am loving the way of life here. Life revolves around being outdoors about good healthy food and being with friends. I am no longer wasting my evenings watching TV or wasting my weekends shopping for clothes or just surfing the internet. People here are very casual and relaxed about what they wear; I made the mistake of packing too many stiff office shirts and trousers that I have to wear. I am not missing anything about Dublin especially its weather, I just wish my family and friends were here with me.

OK, I will stop yapping. But I am happy to answer any questions that you have.

Mariam,
thank you for taking the time to write to me, it was very interesting to read your thoughts, especially the bit about the general conditions of the streetscape. I think I will be living in the North or west side of the island, as I will be based in or around St. Louis, working on various construction projects.
I saw advertised on here there was an ex pat reunion at the weekend, did you go ?
I hope to hear today when I'm due to leave the UK, so fingers crossed.

Regards

Hi Mariam, not sure if you still check this thread but I just arrived in Mauritius, like 4 days ago.  I am currently living in Tamarin and not loving it. I want to be more central as we going to send our daughter to Alexandra house.  I am super keen on Floreal or even Moka as a place of settling but can't seem to find any property for rent in our 30000 budget.  Any help on how you guys found a place? Our only prerequisite is that we have a garden.

So desperate to unpack my bags.... :(

Hanlie Blaise

Hi guys, where to live is clearly a decision based on where you work and where the schools are.  Traveling can be ardous if you have to go through Port Louis for anything, as there is currently only the one road in and out and it is normally congested during peak hours, and even during the day.  The north has much more of a continental, vibey feel from around Trou aux Biches to Bain Boeuf. Many restaurants and pubs, great beaches, and of course, tourists! Further north (Calodyne and Grand Gaube) is more suburban, as is the west and other parts of the island. Good luck with your venture, we have been here 2 1/2 years and we love it.  That said, don't come with too many expectations as the cultural differences could affect you.  If ever you have travelled to Africa (excluding SA) or India and you liked it, you will feel right at home here.
