relocating to KL

Post new topic

Hi all, we are possibly relocating to KL sometime this year and would love some feedback on Cempaka Damansara Heights school and also Cempaka International School. Our budget doesn't allow for the likes of Alice Smith or Garden International. Would also love any advice on what areas would be suitable for us to live in, would prefer an area with a high expat society. We have 2 girls aged 10yrs and 6 yrs.

Hi kiwi4 and welcome to Expat.com :)

kiwi4

thanks for the welcome FeeAcer :)

The answer is too vast.

Can you provide more information such as budget, working area, etc?

Do you want a house or apartment?

Fairview International School is a slightly cheaper option.

There are church centres which use various homeschooling curriculum.

High expat areas are usually Mont Kiara and Ampang.

How about the Australian International School?

Thomas

Hi Thomas thanks for your reply

at this stage we think we will be offered RM200,000 but school fees have to come out of this, have allowed up to RM5,000 per month for rental property, prefer an apartment I think,AIS is RM50,000 more than our budget allows which is why we are considering Cempaka or ELC International schools, my husband will be travelling so I guess the best area to live in would be close to the school that we decide on.

Hi! if you like your kids to have more spacious living, try Country Heights Kajang, there are also quite a number of international schools such as Australia International School, Nexus International School, and Tanarata International School. There is a big community of expatriate living in Country Heights Kajang right now.

kiwi4

Hi all, so we are coming over for a week around the 20th of July to have a look, so I'm guessing areas that we need to look at are Bangsar, Mont Kiara, Damansara and Country Heights Kajang for good expat community, my concern with these are that they are all so far away from Australian International School (we negotiated and can now afford for our children to attend here) are there any expat areas that are closer to AIS?

ThomasK

As mentioned above, Country Heights Kajang is not far from the Australian International School.

A friend of mine stays in Gita Bayu where he says there is a significant expat population. If you want more information on that location, write to my email id thomask1965@yahoo.com

Glad to hear that you are coming on 20 July. You can hire a taxi to bring you around. For your info, quite a number of teachers teaching in Australian International School are currently living in Country Heights, Kajang as they love the environment and the community there. Gita Bayu is also very nice place to stay but the rental is on the high side and the accessibillity is limited as compared to Country Heights Kajang as it only can be accessed via Sungai Besi Highway. Whereby Country Heights can be accessible via 4 main highways, Seremban Highway, Sungai Besi Highway, Silk Highway and Maju Express Highway.

I have a bit of a strange question, when living in apartments how do you shift all your big pieces of furniture in, is it via the standard lift, the reason I'm asking is we have a solid pine bookshelf that measures 2.1m x 1.2m and as work is paying for full relocation costs wondering whether we should ship this over too, just wasn't sure whether the lifts would be big enough to get it up to the apartments.

Are you able to take it apart? un glue it and un screw it? If not then just buy another dust holder. JW

We are in the same position as you. I've been offered a job out there with a decent enough salary but we still have financial commitments in the UK, so can't afford the fees of Alice smith or garden international. You say that you've negiotiated on price with the Australisan school...please tell me more, i wasn't aware that they would be open to negiotiation.
I'll also be very interested in how you trip goes, i'm currently tryiong to arrange a visit out there...just waiting for dates to be arranged.

kiwi4

Hi jOamelie

sorry we negotiated more salary in order to be able to afford to send  our girls to AIS. Our dates have been pushed back and will hopefully be flying into KL around the 25th July. Will definitely let you know how we go.

How long will you be in Malaysia? If you have very tight budget and time constraint, i would advise you to do some study on the rental of the locations that you have short listed to safe you time and hussle in hunting. You can find out some info from a few popular website for house rental such as mudah.my and iProperty.com Malaysia. Based on your budget, the area which is within your rental budget of RM5000 for landed property with gated community is only at Bukit Impiana off Jalan Kudalari, Country Heights Kajang. you can find out the location of the housing area from Google Map, just type "Jalan Kudalari, Country Heights, Kajang". These are new houses with rental range from RM3,000 to RM5,000per month for 2 1/2 storey Semi D house.

International schools in KL are VERY expensive compared to the cost of sending kids to school in Australia. Has anyone looked at distance education. Your kids can do schooling at home online through an accreditated primary/high school. And yes, they receive year 12 certificates.

Aussie74

Australia allows children to carry on with the Aussie curriculum but only for a certain time period. However, there are loads of American schools which have thousands of students worldwide who are enrolled in cyber schools. I think the cost is around $1-2,000 US per year. That might be an alternative.

I strongly recommend to come here first stay in short term apartments to feel the country then matter of days you will find what you are looking for.
