how to fly dogs to Italy?

Hello,
I have 2 small dogs that I'd like to take to Italy. I have had them internationally microchipped, and am aware of all the requirements. Does anyone have experience transporting their pets from the States to Italy, and could you recommend the safest, best way to do it?
