Tamii, Batu Ferrenghi is just an international holiday centre for people who did not do their homework, with a so-so beach and not much else.  Georgetown is more interesting, but not for a young man. There is no life on Penang.  We get cheap beer at the EuroDelli on Gurney Drive, but there is no nightlife worth talking about except possibly Thur-Fri-Sat. Malaysia is a lovely place, but it is a backwater. Backpacking is probably the most social stuff on the island.  KL is a little better, make sure you have lots of cash and head for Changkat Bukit Bintang. Sightseeing is average.

This is just up the road from your hotel:

Take a public bus into Georgetown through Tanjong Tokong on the coast road. Lovely scenery. Georgetown is great if you like wonderful old buildings and streets, wall art, food and atmosphere. The quay area is also interesting.

Its really a working "mini city" and you will see things that are unique to Penang.  Just stop regularly for something to drink and eat and chat to anyone you meet.  The international tourists tend to hang on Chulia Street which is the spine of the old town area.

It's worth remembering that Penang also comes to life after dark. So from 7.30 - 9.00 there is still lots to do and see and no hot sun....
