OK I left the 700gm jar of Vegemite back home and now I need to know who I have to approach to get it on the shelves at the supermarkets.
Any ideas?
Hi Ioanna
If you can stay sane without it for a couple of months more I'll be happy to send you a jar when my hubby goes over in September - and some more when I go myself
I just saw some on sale at the Tamimi's in Khobar. Check with Tamimi's in your area.
Disgusting stuff, though. hahahahaha

Why not try MARMITE as an alternative. We were virtually raised on it during our childhood in the 60s
I gotta try this stuff all the Aussie's are so crazy about!
(I'd googled it a while back and must say it didn't sound too appetizing but when so many people love it, it must have
something!)

Well for aq first timer I must warn you that you should not get put off by what you see, smell and taste, upfront.
Its truly delicious...... with bread and butter and cheese.
Marmite is freely available in Riyadh at all grocery stores. Am not so sure about Vegemite although I think and believe that they are one and the same thing in different clothing.
Something like Coke and Pepsi, perhaps?
No no no, sorry musicman... Pepsi is much better I think the whole Mar-Vegi-mite thing is more a country dispute than anything else. As I didn't grow up with any of them, I taste no difference, but the believers swear they're not even related!
Thanks to all who have posted...Vegemite is the Grand Poobah of spreads for people who don't know any better
Mr Stretch, I have gone through one Tammimi store and didn't find it but that gives me hope to search some more outlets for it or try making some kind of contact with their buying staff (yeah right).
Alliecat, when I get it we can have a Vegemite Eagle Party
Musicman you're right, Marmite can be substituted when one is at the point of desperation but there is truly a difference in taste..Marmite is sweeter just as Pepsi is sweeter than Coke
and to the dear poster who offered to bring me some back from home, THANK YOU, but Mr Stretch, if it is sitting on a shelf in your neighbourhood then, like Cookie Monster says, Me Want!!
what's the drive time between Riyadh and your neck of the woods???

I am aware that Vegemite is available in plenty back home in Sri Lanka. Its a 5.5 hour flight from Riyadh and back, each way though....
For those who have never seen, heard or even tasted Marmite, heres a link to google

So, at the end of the day this big Marmite vs Vegemite is just another big battle between the Brits and their convicts, I guess?
I thought that Marmite was made from the yeast dregs from the Guinness factory in Ireland.
Unless I'm mistaken and I often am.

Yes it is Dave. Spot on. Its a yeast extract from the dregs alright.

Yes those convicts perfected it

Speak to the management at the Tamimi on King Fadhad. I had them order a couple of items for me then purchased several at a time when it came in. Now its on the shelves alot! The management at this store on King Fadhad seem to the the most helpful.
Good Luck!
CAF is right...as they are a "Western" supermarket you can get much better customer service than at Panda or your local market.
Might check Lulu's. I haven't been in there in a while, but they might have it.
I still think Tamimi's is best...but it's a 4 hour drive from Riyadh.

Agree with CAF on the customer service at Tamimi on King Fahad. We had a similar request for our grandson that they fu;lfilled diligently.
Everbody now off to Tamimi to get your Vegemite..... bon apetit!
Spoke with the manager (very helpful) at Tammimi as suggested.
Stocks of Vegemite ran out in December but he asked me to call back next Saturday when a fresh shipment will be arriving..yes!
Thanks guys
..may not need that 4 hour drive afterall, Mr Stretch
Don't hold your breath. It might be "Bad, bad, bad buhkera (?), Inshalla.

u can bet your bottom Riyal that in the desert, tomorrow never comes...
But the nice thing is that they are helpful and TRY to accommodate. We did have to wait a few weeks. The Manager told me he would call when the items came in and he did!
:
They now stock Carnation Coffeemate Original (liquid) and Doritos Corn Chips and Pace Sulsa!
Its the little things in life! lol
C'mon Dave and Musicman, don't rain on my parade
As Dusty would sing,
'Just wishin' and hopin' and hopin' and wishin'..'
I must be the only Aussie in all of Riyadh that's not
a happy little Vegemite....
Showing your age now, and I thought you were a sweet young thing.
