We typically fly from Dallas to Belize city! then water taxi to San Pedro.  Flight are now running $7-800 round trip.
I had talked to several people who have been flying into Cancun, so we tried it this week.

We found a round trip for Dallas to Cancun for $250.  Just outside the terminal was the a ADO bus terminal, leaves almost every hour.  We had the choice of taking the overnight trip, leaving cancun at 11:40, arriving Belize City around 6am.
OR... We could take the one hour trip to playa Del Carmen, then on to Chetumal.  We stayed in Playa overnight, found a great little hotel for $60 US, enjoyed the beach and all the great shops and restaurants.
Breakfast for $6 US, then boarded the bus to Chetumal $40 per person.
Four hours later we are in Chetumal.  hotel Los a Cocos $50.  Highly recommend!,,,
Took a taxi to the FreeZone, did some great shopping.  Seafood dinner and coronas....$30.
Water taxi to San Pedro $40

We had the extra time to go this route and it was definitely worth it. We ended up with and extra vacation. With the money we saved on one flight.
The bus trip was wonderful, no problems at all, very clean and comfortable.
Our next time, we will fly into cancun and do the overnight to Belize ciy on the bus.
