Spanish registered , left hand drive, diesel, either 4 wd or something like a Renault or Citroen Berlingo or similar. If you intend to live or visit out of town make sure its high slung and short wheel base so it can go over the potholes.
I had a Spanish bank account so bought in the UK but then insured by phone through my bank in spain.  You will have difficulty getting cover if you tell them you are leaving the country but you could insure in the UK and then drive in Spain till it runs out . I think I have already replied to you before.  Cars in England and I assume Ireland are much cheaper than in Spain, so it is very tempting to buy a Spanish registered car before you leave.  However it is easy to end up with a car you are unable to register because you do not have the correct documents.  And further more, by the time you have matriculated an Irish registered car it could well be as much or more than buying a Spanish car.  The best thing is to wait till you get to Spain to buy a car. 

If you buy a RHD then you have the fuss of getting out to pay for parking, motorway tolls etc.  You would have to matriculate it once the insurance expires and this could cost several thousand euros depending on how much it cost. 

Again if you buy a LHD, you would be on the right side of the car but still have to matriculate it, it could cost up to several thousand euros depending on its value.

If you buy a Spanish registered car in Ireland or even England it could be a problem when you come to register it in your name here.  I have seen ads saying the seller will sort out the documents, but both the seller and buyer have to go to the traffico office in Spain to change ownership, so most would not want to fly back to Spain to do this.

The best way is to try to find a LHD Spanish registered car being sold in Spain perhaps on Ebay, then hire a one way car or van and drive down.  The car will be picked up when you have sorted out your Spanish car and you will not have to drive it back or try to sell/matriculate the car.  We hired a large van on a one way contract and although we had to pay for collection in Spain, it was much less than taking it back and paying for petrol, ferry, hotel etc, as they only had to take it to a Spanish depot.

The registration of a car that wasn't Spanish registered when you buy it costs around a thousand all in. It's unlikely that you wouldn't have the right papers - you wouldn't need many if the car is already registered in Spain.
Don't get a RHD - too much difficulty driving.  Both parties do not have to go to show change of ownership but you do need them to sign a form here to prove they are selling to you. you could do this by post and you need their identity card no if they are Spanish.

Please let me know how you did.  We are driving over as well with our expensive motor shogun and dogs, Im at the stage you were when you wrote this.  we are going to Murcia house hunting this feb 2015 and will put my home on the market once we see a few possible buys.  I know my house will sell quick however, will have to take our chances being cash buyers and make sure we find our villa / house.  Can you explain your concern about your motor, as I dont understand this area of concern yet.

Apart from the pros and cons of driving a right hand drive in a country set up for left hand drive, there is the issue of importing your car.  You can drive it till the tax, MOT and insurance for driving in Europe expires which can be from 4 weeks to three months or sometimes six months according to your insurance company.

After this time you have to matriculate your English car.  i.e. import and register it for use in Spain.  I had an old 20 year old Toyota four wheel drive worth no more than a £1000 in England but it would cost me about 800 - 900 euros to matriculate it, including paying for a company who looks after the process and documents,  plus paying for any IVT (MOT) costs for work required if applicable.  Most of the costs are fixed, then the actual import tax depends on the value of the car.  I have known someone who paid 3000 euros for a newish car.  We thought we could do it ourselves till we looked in to it and decided paying someone to do it was worth the cost.

If you want to keep your car, look up for English speaking Spanish matriculation agents on line to get a quote.

Perhaps just rent the car from your home to the border (not sure your route plan) then rent a car from Ireland or uk border to spain.. not sure where you will be based in spain but it might just be easier. driving on the right is way safer with the wheel at the right place. And renting sometimes come up cheaper than buying especially if you will be based in Madrid or a city where you might not need the car?
