Hi.  I'm a San Franciscan married to a Deutscher, living in Southern Deutschland.

I've been here long enough to know the difference between the inital romantic "I'm moving to Europe with the love of my life!" and the reality of bagging your own groceries, life without air conditioning, and other cultural pot holes.

Its an experience none of our domestic friends and family can understand, this living abroad thing.  Wild, wonderful and often humbling.

Can anyone relate?

Welcome Jen :)

I had the same problem when I decided to move from my home country. Nobody could understand why I decided to move. "Don't you like our place? We've got everything here!" was the most common comment ... and well, I love it more now that I am not living there anymore! And I love my new life in a foreign country ;)

Here in Russia you not only have to bag your own groceries you must pay for the bag!  Life is humbling here but right now I would not have it any other way.  I am enjoying my life here with my family and we are all making new friends.  I am African American and my husband is white.  It is interesting how hard people work to figure out where we are from.  This week people greeted us in French!  We love this place... :D
