Bulgarian houses confuse me, somebody explain!!

Can anybody please tell me why Bulgarian houses have the front door upstairs and the stairs on the outside of the house?? I'm sure there must be some logical explanation to do with the way they live or used to live but it's a mystery to me!

It's cheaper to build, and I assume you're talking about houses build until the 60's

In looking at all the real estate sites, I had wondered that myself, but I guess it makes sense. I bit chilly in the winter though.
