Working for Colleges of Technology?

Post new topic

Janaace

Hello Oman expats
When I inquired about a TEACHING ENGLISH position at the Colleges of Technology (Ministry of Manpower), i was given this salary breakdown:
Basic  1000 Omani Rial
Housing Allowance - 250
Other allowance - 135

There are also 7 choices for where to go!
i'm assuming that the Cost of Living in Muscat will be higher, but what about living in Shinas, Ibra or Nizwa? Will this salary be enough?
Would I be able to find housing easily in in  Shinas, Ibra  or Nizwa?

I have 30 years of  teaching experience and will be on a Leave from my job here in Canada. I know I can't make the same salary as here, but i have financial responsibilities here as well.

i realize I've asked a lot of questions, but will be grateful for any tidbits of info.
Thanks

Sumitran

Hi Janaace,

Muscat is a very cosmopolitan and a very well-developed metropolis, whereas the other places which you have mentioned are but more than mere small towns, with little or no social life at all. Nizwa perhaps could be a tad better.

For a first-timer to the Sultanate, it would be better to choose Muscat over any of these other locations if you would want to retain your sanity.

If for a single person, the salary of R.O. 1385/- would be sufficient for leading a comfortable life here in Muscat ... and a life of luxury in the interiors - though in the interiors there is really nothing very luxurious to look forward to !

Suggest your read through the 'Cost of Living' topic in the forum for some valuable information on the subject.

i APOLOGIZE to everyone profusely.
I have finally read thru the rest of the Forum - all the way to 400+ and am embarrassed that my Qs were answered so many times before!

Sumitran, you have been so gracious with your patience, insight and advice. You truly are an expert!

i'm still freaked out about having to find my own accommodation though - be it in Muscat or elsewhere. . I've lived in 3 Asian countries but only had to find housing in one. I guess that's part of the adventure!

Anyway, THANK YOU and i'll keep reading.. i didn't find too many EDUCATORS on this forum. Perhaps there is another forum somewhere
Take care and THANKS AGAIN Sumitran. You have been very helpful throughout the years.

Are you already there?
How much time you waited for clearance and visa?
