Okay, I'm thinking we should have a contest here (votes and all!) to develop a cool new nickname for Riyadh.
You know how NYC is called the Big Apple? We could refer to Riyadh as ... the Big Pita? Chicago is the Windy City but that's too easy... Riyadh would be the Sandy City LOL
Ideas! Ideas!!

The Big Bottle

Nah, that's what they call Cairo lol (due to the millions of discarded plastic bottles littering the city--the mess out at the pyramids is enough to make you cry. Seriously).
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, you know that cult classic, The Big Lebowski??
We could call Riyadh 'The Big Mutawa' !!!!!!!

My reference to bottle was related to us being like Genies bottled up inside one...
How about the big bottle opener instead? Referring to the Kingdom Tower that looks like a gigantic bottle opener.

Oh.. it was too obscure a referrence for me to get--sorry!

Okay.. New Orleans is 'The Big Easy.'

Carnavaal, any time, any day......
The Big Bottle is still very appropriate in that we are all waiting to get out like the poor blue genie in Alladin
We have to wait for more suggestions and then vote (could take a while, though--nobody seems to like my topic! )
Don't think this one will get many votes but..

LOL thats what makes the name Rio special ;p
The "Desert Garden"
For those of you that don't know, Riyadh's name actually derives from rawdah in Arabic, meaning gardens. They named it this because of the fertile areas that would spring to life in the region after the desert rains...
I don't know, but it seems cool to me, because when people ask why you would call a place in the desert a garden, you get to give them a little piece of history about the region...
Thank you, Tingle, for this intersting historic tidbit!

Jeddah means Grandmother derived from the belief that the grave of Eve is found there after her banishment from Paradise.
Madinah means The City.
Black and white City......
