Yeah, well, in the US, they egg or 'TP' your house if you don't treat 'em right.

When I was a kid, all we did was mumble curse words under our breath at the people who gave us a handful of corn candy (ugh!!!).

Nelson17

ps

and when you try
the fish to fry
you bet u end up
with plates of meat

gowiththeflowUK

whether fish or meat
this is no mean feat
let's play the game of trick or treat

musicman

and while you beat
your sad retreat
lets bay at the moon
with masks and sweets

gowiththeflowUK

Sweet dreams to none on this hallowed night
Neither trick nor treat will meet with delight
Fear only for the darkness and the silent fright

Sparrow

OK....in my dumbness, I have to confess, I dont know what halloween is and what the meaning is or what you have to do and why. We neva did this thing. We just knew the americans did this but we dont know for what reason. So before you plan something and force me to dress up in my fishnet abaya...let me into your secrets of why you celebrate this eerie night of witches and hand out candy :)

Halloween has its origins in the Christian festival of All Sains Day and some Celtic ritual called "Samhain", based on an ancient Irish celebration of the harvest that happens at summers end.

The masks and costumes are supposed to emulate the spirits. maybe, in order to appease them.

Its not just the tree climbing Africans and Asians who are hooked on to such hocus pocus on the planet, remember?

Halloween can also be called the Christian feast of Hallowmas, Allhallows, or All Saints day. Halloween is connected all the way back to the ancient druids. The Druids believed that on this evening the lord of the dead called upon hosts for evil spirits. The Druids would then light fires on Halloween night for the purpose of warding off these evil spirits.
The ancient Celts believed that Halloween was the last evening of the year and people of this time would examine portents for the future. The Celts also believed that the spirits of the dead also revisited their homes as well on the night of Halloween.
When the Romans conquered Britain they added Halloween to the Roman harvest festival on November first. The Celtic tradition of lighting fires on Halloween has survived until modern times (in Scotland and Wales) and even the concept of ghosts and witches connected to Halloween is still common. Even the Roman harvest festival traditions are still used today. Like dunking for apples in a tub of water and carving out faces on jack-0-lanterns and placing candles in them. The idea coming from leaving a candle in the jack-o-lantern for lost souls. Halloween being the night where the viel between the dead and the living is the thinest.
The idea of wearing costumes and doing more of the 'modern' activities came about during the twentieth century. Turnips turned into the use of pumpkins then later carving into jack o lanterns. The idea of wearing scary costumes or masks came from the Celtics who wore them to scare away food scavengers and hunters turned into what is widely known today as wearing Halloween costumes.(Popular costumes include ghosts, witches, vampires and other things associated with Halloween). And the idea of leaving food behind, or feeding the young ones turned into 'trick or treating.'

As with most other things these days the whole Trick or Treat has commercial gain and exploitation!

Pretty obvious, there's no such thing as a free lunch in the land of the free and the brave, without a doubt...

Mabe Zara can host a Halloween Tea Party for all of us ghouls? But this time with visible invitations, of course... not back door handouts

Sparrow

Thank you "gowiththeflowUK" lovely story.

Support you Allie - someone's got a lot of kissing A to do... ;)

Maybe the men can get into their wives Abhayas on Oct 31, just for a day. Another CD exercise for the bloggers... For singles I am sure there are plenty of xtras to go around?

Sparrow

I want to dress in thobe and fanbelt and drive to the party

Fidgety Soul
