Residents of Ecuador's most world-famous attraction, the Galápagos Islands, staged a nine-hour protest yesterday (June 12, 2015) and flights to the islands were closed for the day.

The protesters want a reversal of cuts in Galápagos subsidies that had doubled their pay until the national assembly overturned a 1978 law this week.

The islanders also are losing their privilege of free flights to and from the mainland.

The wildlife-intensive islands are located 600 miles west of mainland Ecuador´s Pacific Coast.

Free 600 mile flights canceled?
Going on strike for 9 hours didn't do much of anything to anyone except in the tourist and cruise ship industry.  Then again, what else is there 600 miles from shore?  The cruises there cost $3,500 a person for the cheapest inside cabins on a 7 day cruise, more than 3 times what a 7 day cruise costs in Hawaii.  Until the price of oil goes up expect more belt tightening, unless the Chinese come to the rescue.  Sometimes it is better to not be rescued.
