Hiya

My name's Walter Gildersleeve, and I'm an American expat living in Germany since '99.  Left the States after meeting my (future) wife, who was an exchange student at The University of Iowa.  Now (much to my surprise) I've got a German wife, a German son, and another little German on the way :)

It's been fun, but I'm not the Euro-phile who sees nothing but roses here.    Which is why I've starting a new group for grouchy curmudgeons like myself to help each other create a bit of home in their chosen country.  Its library is still pretty small, but that'll change as like-minded people add their know-how--I'm currently patching together a couple articles on taking pets to Europe, making chocolate-chip cookies in Germany (not so easy!), and the difficulties faced by Ami expats.

Check it out!  http://reluctantexpatriates.com.  Like I said, it's still fairly rough around the edges.  And if you are a euro- asia- africa- etc. phile, don't hate us for being human!

Do you quote Dorothy, from the Golden Girls, on your homepage? :D

The homesick belongs to our expat lives.

The most important is to remain open minded, I think.
Welcome to Expat-blog, by the way! :P

Welcome Walter!

Instead of building you own project, wouldn't you like to contribute to the expat-blog project?

We would appreciate few links from your website to ours ... (there's already 4 links from expat-blog to your website) ;)

Take care,

Julien

I haven't had the time to figure out where general links to expat resources should go--currently, I was figuring on having country-specific resources put under the various country pages, much like you do.  For general ones, like your site, I guess I should make a ExpatResources page, or something similar...it's on my list of things to do, but that list is pretty long...

If you want, you're welcome to add a link to expat-blog.com, though you'd have to create the page.  Say, http://reluctantexpatriates.com/library/ExpatResources, or http://reluctantexpatriates.com/library … tResources.

Like I said, I'll get to it soon enough, but you could expedite the process if'n you want.

Hi Julien,

I still haven't gotten around to creating a real links page, but I slapped up a Wiki page with your group on it.  You can find it here : http://reluctantexpatriates.com/library/Links

Hey Walter!  I'm an American living in Greece (3 years now) and I feel your pain.  My Greek sister-in-law is in Freiburg right now, actually, taking an exam to specialize in Pediatrics.  I'll be sure to check out your reluctant ex-pats site!

I embrace the reluctant expat concept!

Sure, I loves me some Austrian baking, but you call THAT Chinese food? Sure I loves me some snowy countryside, but for crying out loud, must ALL the movies be dubbed? Sure, I loves me some socialized medicine, but do you really have NO idea when the MRI machine is going to be fixed? NO idea? How can that BE?  And so on.

Hi, I just joined today,   I've had 6 months living in Barcelona and I'm certainly a grouch about all the differences, though I do live in the moment a lot and enjoy the many beautiful things here too.   I'm going to check out your site! :)

Jaime.
