Comfortable wage for Vancouver BC

Post new topic

WayneUK

Hi All,

I am new to this site and have spent the last few hours reading through all the interesting and informative topics online. Great posts and a great website!!!

My wife and I have just starting talking about moving to Vancouver BC, and I was wondering what a comfortable combined salary would be for this area? We are a young professional couple who currently live and work in London. We don't live extravagantly but we do like some of the finer things in life like living in a nice apartment, going for a decent meal every now and then etc.

From everything I've read the cost of living seems quite high in Vancouver but it's difficult to consider this in isolation without having a rough idea of average salaries and other people's experiences.

Would be interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
If you get professional work in your field you should be getting a comfortable wage here. Housing is the big expense, at least 50% of one person's take-home pay. I'm in marketing and my company considers $60,000 household income "comfortable" but I think that's a little low for Vancouver-area...probably $75k combined would be what I'd consider enough for all the usuals, a few indulgences and to put some aside for later, but everyone's lifestyle is different.

I agree with Namala, if you live anywhere near the fun things to do in the city you'll want to be making above 75,000. You will likely want to own a car too so you can enjoy all the surrounding things to do like skiing and visiting the parks and gulf islands.
