depends on the type of visa you have... and how long you want to stay in china.... but yes it can be done

There is 2 kinds of X visa.
- X1 visa, it allows to study in China for long time and ONLY study.
- X2 visa, allows you to study in China and do internship or part time work. But this job you are going to do should be validate by your school and the government. Plus, this visa is usually for short time study in China, but i don't know how long exactly.

I was told that the x visa is renewable for a year so the validity is one year and I can renew. Is it X1 or x2?

it's X1.
For X2, i know it's as i described previously, however i never saw someone with that visa.
