I heard that the sand flees in Belize can become unbearable...can someone expound on this for me?

Is there are certain time of the year and how long does it last?

Thank you.

Hi Ken...
I was just there for the last 2 weeks of September.
My legs were an all you can eat buffet.
I have since learned some things from the locals...
they can't bit through baby oil
they are especially prominent when it's very hot and there is no wind to blow them away
peroxide and benadryl gel were what i used
i was there in February and didn't get bitten once, so it just depends on when you are there
i have searched all over the web looking for preventive stuff and it usually points back to baby oil, deep woods off or something w/a high level of deet or avon's skin so soft...
i am going back in March and will test out the baby oil thing, but i suspect it will be too cold for them
good luck!

Try Avon's Skin-so-Soft. Apply it directly to skin and it can also be put in when washing your clothes. I used this when I lived in Florida and had great sucess with it. I am assuming the little devils are the same in both Belize and Florida and the preventive nature of the lotion will be as effective in both places.

Hi Ken,

I was there in June July 2010 and my ankles were bitten all over. It was pretty bad as I scratched them and got infected ie swolen ankle etc.  I understand that they come out in the heat and especially before it rains.  I didn't use bug spray or anything but next time I will.  I think it's all part of learning to live in a different eco system.

we were there in january and me the guy that never gets bit came back looking like i had the measells and i used 100% deet spray. we have been 8 times and this was the only time i got bitten real bad.
