How common is english used in HCMC?

Post new topic

Charles Chee

I am a career coach and am travelling to HCMC sometime in end Oct 2015 for holiday. I may take the opportunity to visit a school to share on career coaching if the opportunity arises. I am wondering if language may be a barrier, as I speak mainly English and some Mandarin.

Is there any districts in HCMC that speaks more English perhaps?? :-)

Thanks in advance for any tips! Cheers!

In tourist areas and hotels in Saigon and other cities, it is perfectly easy to use English. In non-tourist areas English is not understood or spoken.

Bro,

Suggest you stay around Cho Ben Thanh area in district one. Else, as mentioned, location outside the city or further away will have problem with English.

If you are staying in District 5, Cantonese is quite common there.

I am Singaporean myself and the best way to get around is to have a Vietnamese friend (who can speak either English or Mandarin) to be your translator and guide.

PM me if you need me to recommend.
