Hello Alex,

I used Japanese for Everyone to learn Japanese. What I liked about it was, that it forces you to read in the Kana. A lot of beginner books, use romaji to teach Japanese. I think that's a bad idea. This book doesn't teach you the Kana. You need to learn them somewhere else. I don't recall which books I used.

For Kanji I used Basic Kanji volumes 1 & 2. They'll take you through the first 500 kanji. I thought they were excellent books.

Good luck.

Hi Alex,
It depends on your purpose. Do you need to learn Japanese as a traveler, or do you plan to live there, etc? For the former, a romanised Japanese will do and I will recommend Japanese for Busy People, which still provides a good guide on the grammar. Most other textbooks focus heavily on the grammar and reading comprehension in hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
