1. Unless your father got that promise in writing, it's worth nothing.
2. I seriously doubt that a legit company would confiscate your dad's passport. Either your dad got himself tangled up in a shady operation (very doubtful), or you're exaggerating/lying.

What exactly do you need help with? Is your dad in danger? You say you need help finding him, but since you said he contacted you it seems he's perfectly fine. If he can't come to your wedding, then that's just too bad. Your dad should have gotten the company to promise in writing that he'd be able to fly back to Romania for your wedding. Although I seriously doubt that a company would fly someone here if they were gonna fly them back just two weeks later. Like I said, your story sounds suspicious.

Big T, you are sadly out of tuna.

Construction companies (and several others) retain the passports of their worker bees to keep them in line. Totally out of order I know, but it happens as a matter of practise in the Arab world as a matter of fact. Passport or job? Not much chance of a "no" if you're desperate for work eh?

And it looks like you are all out of sand, bud. Apparently you missed the part about the company being Canadian.
I don't live under a rock. I'm pretty well aware that in third world countries confiscating passports is routine business.
However, to the best of my knowledge a company confiscating an employee's passport is mucho illegal in virtually all western nations. My advice was given based on the fact that this was a Canadian company we were talking about.

Please concentrate on the initial topic. Thank you.

it sounds fishy to me!

Given how hard it is for companies to arrange working visas for expats, I'd be surprised at any employer being willing to bring someone in for 2 weeks then let them go again.  Depending on the visa he had, the employer may well have taken his passport. My employer takes mine every 6 months to get me a new multiple exit visa. It is feasible that the company has taken the passport for 'processing' and it's currently sat on an someone's desk, gathering cigarette ash.

Have you tried contacting the Romanian Embassy in Tripoli?

I agree with lost, I think it's just spam. Poor child from Romania, living in London with Yahoo India email address........

Go figure.

Hi,

First of all thank you all for your replies. To bring a bit more light in this case, I would like to tell you that the post has been sarted by my husband, who is Indian. That's why the email address is from there. We both live in the UK currently.
I am Romanian and my dad left on Saturday from RO to Libya. I only managed to speak with him on the phone on Sunday, since then I couldn't get in touch with him at all.
My husband was trying to help me that's why he started this post, and because we were both desperate it sounded like spam. It's not.I wouldn't start a post on this topic not even as joke, think about it.
We have the wedding on 6th of November in Romania, and my dad left the country hoping that he will be able to talk with his boss there, once he will arrive and convince them to let him go for few days on his expense.
On Sunday when I spoke with him for 1 min, he said that his passport has been held in Benghazi, and that the situation is not great, there are very little chances to come back.
I applogize if it seemed to be spam, all we were trying was to find some help, some guidence. Maybe you have more experience in such cases and help us.
Many thanks and appologize once again.

The name of the company is SNC Lavalin, canadian company. THey got the visas in Romania, befor they left, that's why I don't understand why they had to hold their passaport again in Benghazi. Do you know if is there to get from Sarir to Benghazi? Canhe travel alone from the site to Benghazi? Is it safe?
Many thanks

Mudman

If he's on a work visa, then I believe he'd need an exit visa to leave. That'd mean giving his passport to the employer. If the employer has a large amount of workers then maybe they wait until they've got a batch, then give them to their agent/fixer to send for processing. Just speculating from a management point of view, it's what I'd do if I was the boss with alot of workers.
