Good effort!
I would like to give one of these Cafes a try on my next visit to HCMC.
Suggestion:
You may skip posting (downloading & uploading) all these photos here.
Instead, just add "Please click on the link to see the photos." below the link that you have provided. That will keep you safe from any copyright issues, just in case ....
Try to find news which is rich in information, otherwise rarely available in English.
A good starting point could be to focus on the MKD region.
YEa, at first i did that, but s.o complained that would never read some thread with all links like that, not attractive.
Must agree! Anw, at least i need to make my work more completed, i can add photos, so why wouldnt, hehe.
Admit that u found it more convenient and attractive, haha
Absolutely amazing pics - i am very impressed with VN and when i see pics like this, it adds a touch of class and its amazing - It also gives foreigners/expats a true picture of whats out there in VN especially those who like coffee shops - well done - looking forward to seeing the crowded seafood restaurants
Ngattt - thanks for helping the OP to post the pics, your step-by-step pic guide is very good.
Sharing and helping on the forum is exactly what the forum is about.. a good teacher
Yea, tks a lot!!!!
Tks to her too, ngatt!
Just hope 1 day, i would see no more complains about high fee charge for only foreigners. Find places with crowded of Vietnamese, and also be careful with the menu. I'll try to give review of others customers with the general prices
I haven't, but those place quite famous in vn. Normally the drinks will be about 30-60k, i guest
Wowow!
Great places I want to visit.
Thank you very much for your efforts so as to enable foreigners like me to try the best of Vietnam culture.
I have been amazed at the taste of coffee here especially the quality of it regardless of the price.
Now I want to find out good coffee taste in these great looking coffee shops.
There is one thing that bothers me though.
Why aren't there any mention of coffee taste???
Yillbyung Lee
Good question! There are 3 things u need to know:
1)Our country is one of the no.1 in expporting coffee. That's why u dont need to be so impressed.
2) these places are called "coffee shops" buttttt they do not focus on coffee. So you cant find good taste of coffee over here.
3) And 1 more, i cant drink coffee : D. I will get dizzy after that @@

I Vietnam is still a long way on knowing how to make a good cappuccino. most of the usual obvious places I've been so far cannot make a good and consistent coffee. sometimes a nice looking place can be misleading in producing great coffees
To tell u the truth, we dont know what "cappuchino" is, literally!! (Or even we know, still be effected strongly by our taste)
Because we have our own taste of coffee. You can see that ppl in here addicted to coffee a lot too. My mom is one of them @@
And u can easily get a very nice and cheap coffee on the street with the maximum price is 10k
Thanks for the answers!
I wanted to start my journey into Vietnamese coffee from these places as a start.
Maybe I should not expect too much as least in terms of coffee taste from these places.
Can I copy your article in my blog where I write in Korean about my life in HCMC?
And lastly, I think I found a typing error in the title: ranged ---> ranked.
y. lee
Ok, haha. Just fix it for me please. Tks a lot. Sometimes i just say but forget how it should be pronouced.
Anw, do not expect anything when u come to Vietnam, or maybe anywhere, i guest. Cos like it is a journey, an adventure you need to find out urself. Hehe.
That's what i think, just enjoyyyyy <3
In those lovely Garden Cafes in HCMC, a glass of cafe-da is just an excuse for relaxation. You pay for the ambiance.
When it comes to taste, I prefer Trung Nguyen coffee shops.
ok, so now im gonna review some more garden coffee too.
That would be great! Please do.
Garden Cafes are unique to HCMC and other southern provinces. In Hanoi they are rare, if at all!

people in Australia is addicted to coffees. cappuccino is the most common type like a cafe da in Vietnam. you ain't really famous till you know how to make a good cappuccino. it isn't as simple as frothing the milk and chucking it in with quality coffee beans. A good coffee comes down to the machine used, how the beans are ground, coffee crema, temperature, blah blah blah. it can get pretty hardcore when they start making patterns and pictures. for me though, I am not fussy, I just want the triple shot caffeine hit thanks.
I dont know much about coffee, cos i dont drink it.
But i might not agree that is really necessary in being famous in coffee by making cappuccino.
Each country has their own speciality. we are ca phe da or ca phe sua da. We drink what we taste good, like cuisine.
Somehow just because we are Vietnamese, we are simple, so we pick "simple" as our strength
This site gives an insight into Viet coffee. Good information for newbies in Vietnam!
An Overview of Vietnamese Coffee
really helpful post. I will visit these nice coffee shops when I have time in Saigon. Thank u so much!

Coffee isn't culturally dependent. cappuccinos is not just popular in Australia but in most western societies. Nobody is saying Vietnamese don't know their coffee. I am saying Vietnamese do not know how to make a proper cappuccino. Coffee enthusiasts drink long black, which is pretty much just like a Vietnamese coffee without the ice. If you're talking about taste, you rarely see Vietnamese people order their coffee without sugar. So much for liking things strong. The quality of coffee is judged by the scent of the bean and not by how good the sugar is. I really suggest you start drinking coffee if you're going to recommend the best coffee places.
Sorry, i dont wanna discuss about this. As you can see, s.o did ask why i didnt mention about the taste of coffee of this thread, and i did give him answers.
These places i just made from translation, from a trustworthy newspaper of local, and those are not about the coffee, those are about the PLACE.
Btw, i dont drink coffee cos of my health and i didnt make this post to fake myself as a master of coffee or like focusing on coffee.
I only translate, only!
I understand. The topic is just misleading when its quoted the best coffee places, so one would think it is about coffee rather than interior designing.
Great post Ngoc Anh. I learned more about Vietnamese coffee and coffee houses than I would have thought possible.
In my opinion the ambience of the coffee house is a factor in enjoying not just coffee but the unique Vietnamese "coffee culture" and so your pictures and posts were great. Example - I was surprised to learn that The Trung Nguyen Coffee company is located in the US and was relieved to learn that their "civet coffee" does not actually pass through a Civet Cat but is made with modern methods.
I want to visit some of these coffee houses
Ngoc Anh, You stated that Vietnam is the world's number one exporter of coffee. An internet search tells me that Brazil still is. Vietnam remains #2 with about half the exports Brazil has. The Trung Nguyen site linked by Bia Hoi also names Vietnam as number two. Of interest, Vietnam surpassed Colombia as #2 more than ten years ago. Colombia fell to number three, but now Indonesia is listed as number three.
I've drank coffee in every coffee producing county in the Americas from Mexico south. The great majority of those countries produced very high quality coffees. But not all coffees travel well. When in Vietnam I very much enjoy Vietnamse coffee, but I always bring in a few vacuum packed expresso ground Latin coffees. These tend to be Arabicas rather than Robustos, but there are superior Robustos even in Vietnam. I do believe there is an appreciable difference between the taste of coffees from Hue south, versus the coffee I've tasted in Hanoi, which I found not as much to my taste as the coffees one drinks in the South. The irony is that North Vietnam once produced Arabica coffees, and I presume the still do. Perhaps it is the remainders of the grounds I find in Hanoi coffees, reminiscent of the grounds in Turkish coffee.
My two cents, and I greatly enjoyed your article. Looking forward to some more high quality cafe sua da's on my next visit to Saigon, in some of the places you've mentioned. In a future article, perhaps you can come up with a means of grading the coffees offered by the various coffee shops you visit.
ps, I still hold that Hanoians brew the better teas in Vietnam, but Saigon remains the Queen of Vietnamese coffee.
There are two nice coffee shops in Cam Duc but I prefer the less opulent ones where the men hang out before or after work. The conversation is better. They are more likely to talk about things that the more affluent people don't talk about. When I am going about with friends or am to meet someone I go to the nice places. When alone I go to the places where one might sit on a block of wood or there are five guys playing cards enthusiastically or one in which there are two fellows who keep trying to teach me chess. I am, alas, not an apt pupil.
These were all amazing! I tried then after reading your list. Have you any suggestions for Hanoi?
Thanks for such a fantastic listing!!
very well said , thi
each country has its own culture and history
of drinking coffee
why ape blindly others drinking hibits
just to be famous
Robusta beans are better beans in the southern highlands. Robusta worldwide is generally used for instant and decaf because it is cheaper. The VN robusta makes better coffee in my estimation than the arabica. In America now you can get the Vietnamese coffee for a dollar for 6 ounces. It is the cheapest you can get in the stores and is the best. You have to go to the gourmet coffee sellers to get as good. I have noticed that the quality of instant has improved a lot in the last few years. I wonder if it is because the beans come from Việt Nam.
There are two very beautiful garden cafes in Cam Lam.
Thanks a lot for you all appreciation. However, i am on the project of making these kind of thread wider and more helpful for all foreigners.
Hope that we are able to make it as soon as possible. And not only stop at coffee shop, we hopefully update all of locals' interests.
Many thanks
I do not travel a lot in Viet Nam. I like to just walk and talk to whoever calls to the foreigner. The old people especially are interesting. Thy talk a lot of history.
