Hello All,

I am a teacher and have been offered a job at an international school in KL. I have a daughter who is 7 and can attend the school for free; a 2 year old whom I will need to fund kindergarten for and a husband who is a qualified social worker and TEFL teacher but he doesn't have a job yet.
Two questions - can we live comfortably on 11,000 RM per month until he finds work?
How difficult would you say it would be for him to find work?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Nemodot

No. Not at these exchange rates.

Colleague - with spouse and two kids with free spaces - few years ago earnt more than that (at much better FX rates) Left after a year as he couldn't make ends meet. He took a much higher paying job.

Depending on your subject of course whether this is barely ok ( for a single) or totally out of order.

Finding work in Malaysia. Really depends on what he does (apart from tefl although can get something) even in most popular  areas it takes along while. Tefl if you mean has a DELTA and experience he can earn up to 12k at the British council for example.

Fx rates are important btw especially as recent slump in RM will import inflation. And savings potential!

Hi,

RM 11000 is undoubtedly is a huge sum of money. It is more than enough for live a comfortable and luxurious life here in KL. TO be honest RM 5-6K is already enough for the rental (based on the location u choose), food, transportation, entertainment and etc. Believe me sir, its more than enough. You are very welcomed to Malaysia.

Nemodot

Totally disagree Zafizat honestly 11k is a low salary in kl for an expat.  For a 23 year old 7k is good if an Asian expat. And normal from my experience. For a family of 4 even with free school places 11k is too low especially for Brits or Americans etc.

Expat school teachers earn alot more in good international schools.

Even local state school teachers earn 6k per month if senior per government figures. They get big perks like low interest loans as well for houses and cars. That is usually for half a days work and they make another 5k or more in tuition if they want.

A married couple as teachers can easily pull in 20k a month between them in selangor if they want (schools only have half day so free for tuition). With the cheap loans that means they can just afford a house in selangor. And a car each say a proton saga each. Not luxury just lower middle class lifestyle.

Hi Miss. RM 11K is more then enough to live comfortably in KL. Trust me. If I can know where your school is located, I can suggest you good places with decant rent for your accommodation. Thank You

Those who said yes to you is very likely to be the locals. i guarantee their lifestyle are very different to most brits. Anyway, you should be able to survive on RM11K for four of you, but certainly not comfortably. House rental in a decent area may cost the same as your monthly wages, so it is better to ask your school if housing allowance can be provided. The good thing in msia is private tuition is always in demand, the rate can be very good esp. if your husband can teach the locals to pass the exam (eg. ielts) with excellent grade.

Nemodot

No they are single! kids are expensive. Very expensive.

Locals I know spend as much if not more than expats who are often adapt at living simple as we value bling less eg I drive a proton not a BMW. I don't need designer clothes to flash to neighbours etc

Also expats have to return home or have to factor that in for savings. West is more expensive than India say so earnings have to be higher to give higher savings potential.

Thanks for all your replies. The salary is 14,000RM per month but works out at just over 11,000 once dedications have been taken.

Hi there!

I would say an expat like you can have a decent living with RM11k but it comes with do and don'ts.

An international school may poke a hole to your pocket but since you have it funded you can save your bills. Food is reasonable but you may ended up paying a lil more since the taste bud Is vary from Asian. A decent condo with expat amenities will cost about RM3500-RM4500 in KL. transportation may cost you another RM300- RM500 depending your mode of transportation.

If you avoid frequent shoping and frequent meal at cost restaurant I bet you Guys can survive here. I work with expats and I learned their spending pattern and life style are totally diff from local. RM11k is luxury for locals but decent for Expat.

I agree with @samsam123, the demand for native English tutors are good and the fees are reasonably good too. I have seen some making fortune in private coaching. He can just get registered with the agents and with a small commission paid he can get classes.

Wish you guys luck!

I believe everybody have said so. You can live in a luxury house or maybe get a car for you to go around. I have 7 family member with only 2 of us working RM4k++ then why not your family?.. ^^
Good luck! :D

Living off this at moment in virtually identical position. 2 kids 2 free spaces. Husband not working. Live near to school so no car to save money. No helper to save money. Food cheaper than UK. At moment we are living off UK money and it us all rather lovely but we are about to come out of the bubble and exist on what you will be living on. Good luck. Just consider it a move to experience a new place and explore. The exchange rate is not good at the moment and in fact I earned more part time with child benefit than I do full time here. If it is about living it up on a single income you won't be as all the extras at school really mount up.... Not trying to put you off because it is a great experience but just ensure you have some savings from the UK to bring with you to set up home etc.

You need at least RM20000 to have a comfortable life. Your husband needs to find a job from abroad, otherwise his pay will be to little
