Hi there,
Is there any Halloween party in Riyadh?? I know it sounds bit different but I guess there is no harm in asking??
Regards
Salman
Halloween's over! You missed it by a day.
Your question should be: "Anyone willing to take me in on Thanksgiving?" ...JK...
I love halloween parties. If any parties come up, please let me be the first to know.
And i feel like I shouldn't really be asking you but i need a big massive favor, i really don't like to ask, and i wouldn't ask if i wasn't desperate but..... could i possibly borrow your face for halloween?
when was halloween and when is thanksgiving?
I missed it
same here...
i was at American School yesterday and they have a very wonderful gathering of Pre K school kids with different outfits... it was really awsome to watch so colourful and organized event.

Halloween is Oct 31st & Thanksgiving in the US is the 4th Thursday of November
But what does it represent. All i know is Halloween is the favorite concept for Horror movies and Thanksgiving is for eating Turkey

According to our compound manager all you need to know is that Halloween is HARAM!! and Thanksgiving is something best not mentioned
Zara - where on earth do you live? I think its time to get your name on another compound list or your going to go mad!
Amongst the locals Halloween is associated with the devil (Satan) and hence the resentment arises since he is supposed to be the enemy of God.
As for Thanksgiving, I cant see any specific reason other than its considered a Christian/Pagan religious event which it is not.
Thanksgiving is a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Americans commonly believe that the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, in Massachusetts and there is strong evidence for earlier celebrations by Spanish explorers in St Augustine, Florida (1565).

thanks for a nice explanation.
Last year I attended a christmas party at FAL compound as one of my westerner colleague was staying there and it was marvellous. This year he is not around and so if there is any good christmas gathering in Riyadh please let me know.
Salman THE TAURAS
CAF you are absolutley right about thanksgiving, but in the eyes of the blind leading the blind it is an american tradition so it must be bad.
Halloween has nothing to do with satan or devils, but is derived from "all hallows eve" the day before All Hallows Day.
Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, primarily in Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the United States. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day [All Hallows Day], but is today largely a secular celebration .
Common Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.

I live on the same compound as mm2, we did eventually have a Halloween party but not after a number of people tried to get it banned
The compound is nice but there is a hardcore minority who would like to see just about anything banned or covered under a niqab

Salman2 - we may be having not a Christmas party, but a 'Holiday' party on our compound on a date no where near the 25th of December, I will keep you posted

And almost the same style. You've got a competition, Abou-Yusuf.
Ramon,
The compound is nice but there is a hardcore minority who would like to see just about anything banned or covered under a niqab!!
It does make you wonder why they're on a compound??

A company compound? Sounds like mine. I live here because I'm indentured LOL
As Zara has said there is an element on this compound that seem to think that they can exercise power because of their beliefs, unfortunately that is something I will not tolerate and I will be having christmas lights on the tree outside and making sure that these people know that I am celebrating Christmas on the 25th.
CAF you are right that they should not be on a compound. The final decision as to whether I stay here will be made when the family come out next month for 3 weeks and if they tell me there is an undercurrent of relegious zeal then will move. Also will go to my company and inform them of the state of affairs as they are looking to put a lot of expats on here as the company grows.
It is typical that they will never say anything to the men and everything is aimed at the woman.
I have walked around topless but they never say anything to me Zara do you fancying trying that to see what reaction you get?
Nothing like a rant in the morning to get you set up for the day

Compounds r supposed to be for everybody, respect other religion's feelings, celebrate other cultures, other festivals and mingle with one another, otherwise whats the purpose of living in a gated community? the basic aim and definition of a compound looked to be spoiled by those people. Looks stange for me.

To my traditional wear knowledge, scotsmen go bottomless under their kilts and you all remember, MM2 showed us his skirt and woggle (what ever that furry thing was) and he asked us which was bigger.
Nonz, just ask MM2 whats under his kilt.
he'd probably say he needs to take a nother look before he answers that Q...

Sparrow, that's a sporran. I have a woggle, in fact I have a selection of them. Made of leather, rope, metal, bone and coney.

Two-thirds of the compound is leased by a hospital but that's not the problem, it's some of the other expats who have moved on and have decided to change the ethos
Luckily we have MM2 on the case with his giant Christmas tree and inflatable santas

Why I m da one who always miss the Best shows
I got to see this or my soul may not rest in the peace (if i m not gonna see the master piece )
Maybe mm2 could do a great Xmas show for the rest of the gang, Kilt, Sporran, Woggle, et al? Set him up with Dave's English neighbor and we could have a sell out...
