Hi,

A lot of expats dream of becoming self-employed: we would like to help you to make that dream come true.

Can foreigners work as self-employed in India? What are the formalities to work as a freelancer?

What are the pros and cons of this status: social security, tax system, etc.?

How is the freelance market in India?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

Last I looked, it was a little like China, had to be sponsored in some way, but I could be wrong.

I tried to work as a freelancer and got told to apply for business visa to do so. When I did this I got my visa denied and told i should have applied for an employment visa. I did and got this denied as I didn't have a contract. I explained I was freelance and initially told to apply for business visa - they say I needed guaranteed income of 24,000 american dollars per year. I said I can get but they wanted employment contract. Eventually after being given lots of wrong advice and it taking months I got employment contract and visa and gave up on the idea of working freelance.
