Greetings -

I'm looking to move to Hyd within the next 3-5 months. Prior to moving, I'm looking to learn some Hindi and probably convert religiously. I have several Indian friends there now to help me ease in, but know it's going to be maximum culture shock. What advice can you provide or info you think I need to be aware of. Specifically I'll need info on finding a job (my current employer has an office there but I'm doubtful I'll be able to transfer) and how I can legally stay in the county (I currently have a one year Visa that will expire Sept 2011 but plan to be married by then) long term.
What advice can you provide regarding finances, employement, health insurance, relationships, anything that you wish you would have known prior to arriving. What brought you to India and specifically to Hyd?

Dear aimes79

Hyderabad is not a good place, but if you are software engineer, opportunities are for you.
Ohter jobs are full of exploitation.
Working extra hours without over time, salary delay non payments are rountine things here.
Hyderabad is very very unplanned city. Public transport is worst.
If you trade with Loyalty you can not survive here. Trade with only cheating is right here.
Only good thing about this city is woman on the streats are quite safe compare to other Indian cities.

Hi ,

Well Hyderabad is a nice city and good for expats to stay in.If u r computer personnal then this city has lot to offer in terms of employment,If u r not then u need to explore other cities like Bangalore  which has almost all the sectors in it and u can find employment for all professions.Regarding learning Hindi u can learn hindi once to come to India .See most important is ur job,If u have a good job here ur finances and health Insurance will be taken care off,u just have to be lil smart in spending ur money.Secondly u have to be careful to go in a relationship with someone.Give urself enough time to know and understand that person completely so that u can trust on him.
Regarding ur employment offer I know a company who offers employment for foreigners depending the term they wanna stay and I dont think that to get employment here is so difficult.
Do respond if u have some doubts and queries......

Regards......

Jayad,
not sure about your personal experiences, I have not seen any companies delaying their salary payments, please check if this is a direct employment or a third party recruiting agency which is delaying these payments, Generally most companies pays on 30th or 1st, but if your third party agency is not giving you the money, mostly its no the company's fault, getting into speciffics rather than generalizing would help.

To trade with the localities, you need to know the native language or need friend's help, but for expats, you have a lot of super markets where you dont need to bargain, just go, get wtever you want and it's a fixed price, so where is cheating??

Please do not generalize everything, there is always a subjectivity for every thing and getting into specific experience would help for an unbiased opinion on wt happended.

Hyderabad, I would say, scores over other cities in india in terms of low cost of living, climate, easy accessibility. In my opinion, it is a fairly easy and accommodating city to move into. Sure its congested, chaotic etc etc, but it is quite a friendly place in many ways. For female foreigner, as long as they take usual commonsense precautions it should be ok . Hyderabad has started expanding these days and is no more restricted just to the twin cities. So this elimates the chances of congestion in future as well.

Bookstores, Yoga, Shopping etc. - you wont have issues.
western style groceries - Theres a supermarket called Q-mart in banjara hills which stocks a lot of imported grocery items. For normal groceries theres a supermarket at every street corner.

You can have broadband internet in your flat. speeds are ok unless you are accessing heavy audio/visual content.

As for the weather, its fairly pleasant for most part of the year except the summer. April, May and June are quite warm. You can expect peak temp to be in the range of 41-43 degree C in thee areas, The summer heat in Hyd (for short) will also give you experience of hot winds blowing as if you are in a desert (The Deccan!)- the overhead sun can be blistering between 11am-4pm. There are few zims arround to stay fit.
To minimize discomfort during summer, limit your day time travel, keep yourself hydrated and cover your face when you are outside. You would need to buy an A/C for your apartment/house if it is not already furnished for you. Monsoon season lasts until September/October with July and August being the highest rainfall months. However even during July and August mean number of rainy days that you can expect to have is around 10 per month. And it does not rain all day most of the time. Rain during the non-monsoon months is minimal in comparison.you will be fine during the monsoon season in India. It is actually fun to go out and get drenched when it is raining. If you do not want to do that a good umbrella (you can buy this in India) will stand you in good stead.

You will love Hyderabad if you are an Indian food lover. Get a taste of Hyderabadi biryani at one of major establishments in the city and you will become a fan for life.

For further reference this is a blog of an American family who lived in the city for a semester last year.
