Back to Libya Advice

Post new topic

Fifer

Boys & Girls,

Due to get back to Libya working through Taknia (used to be Teknica) within the next week to fortnight, and was wondering if any of your regulars could give some general advice on a couple of Q's that I have?.

It's been ten years since I was in Tripoli last - so no doubt things will have changed a bit.

Q's.

1. What (approx) is the current unofficial $ to D exchange rate?.
2. Has Tripoli airport been upgraded or is it still the same old place that I loved/hated 10 yrs ago?
3. Any issues with bringing in any of the following - Laptop, Mobile Ph, Small Camera?.
4. How much does a 2L bottle of Coke cost?
5. Flat panel TV's - are they avail - and how does the cost compare to back home (UK)?.

I used to be able to get bacon/sausages in through the Tunisian border when the old embargo was on with no probs - but was wondering if this is still the case with Trip airport?. Would like some home comforts - but don't want to cause any legal issues as a new hire.

Cheers m'dears

Hello Fifer.

1. Exchange rate= approx 1,2LYD to USD
2. Tripoli Airport is still a dump. Falkirk bus station has better facilities.
3. No probs with laptop, phone, camera. Everyones got them now, and are readily available in shops here.
4. 2L of Coke costs 2.25LYD in local supermarket.
5. Flat scren TVs readily available, but not the same range as in the UK. Price much the same, maybe slightly more, depending upon brand.
6. Forget the bacon / sausages etc. Too much hassle if they stop you. Haven't heard of any cross-border stuff.

Perhaps the folks at Regatta or Palm City ghettos might know better.

Good luck.

We never once had a problem or even a cursory look in the bag. The last time we arrived in Tripoli there were around 10Kg of each and the bag was oinking it's way through the scanner

I've brought porky products through for other people, being a veggie myself, it's no problem at all. As opposed to the other banned products that is...

Excellent - thanks a million for all your replies.

Wow - hasn't the 'unofficial' rate taken a hit.  It was 300 LD for $100 when I was there, and Coke was only 1.5LD then  - admittedly it was 10 years ago now - but how things change, that's a massive drop from 300 to 120 - whewww (I'm Scottish and tight - lol).

Will stick with a few Mattesons smoked sausages for the first trip and see how I get on, and will take it from there. First trip will only be for 6 weeks or so - so it'll not be the end of the world if Fifer doesn't get his share of oink for a wee while - lol.

As long as I can still get Coke for a mixer ;)

I don't know where these clowns shop but 2 Liter soft drinks ARE still 1.5 LYD. You can even get em for just a dinar if you go with the locally produced copycat brand.

Took 25KG of oink products through the last time (Sepember) no problem at all mate. You will notice a big change in Tripoli since you were last here (apart fae the airport that is )

It will be interesting to hear your comments about Taknia when you get here. Don't want to put you off any but rumuor has it they are pretty awful (understatement). Good luck.

Fifer

Cheers for the updates gents.

Horz Harry - as for Taknia - I've not much to go on - but up to now - they've been pretty efficient re the visa - (application to collection in Malta in under a fortnight).

I'm not too fussy about the quality of transit accom or who they fly my with - as long as my cash is in the bank on time - I'll be a happy camper. If you know different to this - I would be grateful for any input you can give, as the reason I left Libya last time was down to a crowd called AOT (Austrian Oil Technology, who didn't like paying, and are still owe me 5 months' salary from 10 years ago.

Cheers m'dears

Can't comment about payments, haven't heard anything, but i hear their camp in Tajura is pretty dire.
Keep us posted.

Austrian Oil Technology, there's a name from the past, wonder if they are still around. It was an English guy Mike and a Scottish guy Bill running it I recall. Haven't seen either in years.

Fifer

Both Mike & Bill ran for the hills just before I got hooked in with them.

During my stay, it was a Pakistani called Khallid Rehman that ran the office on behalf of the Goeshels who sat back in Austria and spent all the cash - lol. You've got to laugh - otherwise you'd cry!. They used to have a villa on the west side of town- but that's probably long gone.

Should only be in Tripoli for a week max - and then off to the desert, (says he keeping fingers crossed).

Thebigtuna

Best of luck to you, and be grateful that it's winter :P
